After reading and rereading Ingot to Target and searching this site for answers to questions, I broke out my Christmas present to me (Santa and I agreed to concentrate on how good I've been the last week or two) and got busy. I settled on my Keith mold for the 44. It didn't go smoothly at first, but I finally got the hang of it. The results aren't the prettiest, but I'm learning tons as I go.

Man, this is some addictive stuff.

Get the mold hotter and those wrinkles will go away. Once I bought a hot plate to preheat my mould my rejects went way down. Keep at it, and you'll figure it out. Congrats on your first cast!

Good job! Wrinkled or not they still shoot well. I love to cast and get wrinkles or frosting. It's a learning curve.

Your done for now, it's all over. Get rid of your stuff and bury those bullets in a deep hole, LAST WARNING.
Just kidding, nice going, little more heat and? or cast faster, stop looking at the bullets while you cast.

Be sure and post up some pics when you get around to shooting those Keith boolits. The nice thing about boolit casting is you can throw any ugly ones back in the pot and pour them again. I've shot plenty of wrinkled boolits through my pistols and didn't see any difference on the target. As long as the driving bands aren't wrinkled and the boolits aren't undersized you should be good to go. Get more heat into the mold and those wrinkles will disappear.

stop looking at the bullets while you cast Perhaps the most accurate assessment yet. Yep, that was me. Oh yeah, and not paying enough attention to heating up the mold. Man, this is a whole lot of fun...

See the difference in fillout - much sharper corners. You are well on your way. Oh, and by the way - you're hooked. Sorry.

Awesome stuff! I just started casting a few weeks ago. Just ordered my second and third molds. Yup. Hooked. Bad.

That second batch looks pretty good. Are you using a "big lube" mould from Mav Dutchman? Those were designed for holding lots of SPG lube when shooting black powder cartridges, but they work fine for smokeless, too.

Thanks for the comments. I'm using Lyman's 429421 mold.

Huge improvement. Still could be hotter. Cast faster, no inspection while
casting.

Adding about 1-2% more tin also helps fill out a lot.

8-)That second batch looks much more better. It's too late though. You're hooked I'm afraid.

Might as well buckle up, you're stuck now. Before you know it you'll be casting more than you can shoot. I have to make a point to not cast for set periods, or I would have bullets everywhere. You know you're into a great hobby when the "boring" part is as fun as shooting them.
