Got the bike out of the shop - left sitting too long - boiled out the carb and new petcock
Rode home - rode yesterday - filled up today to go meet some guys for a run up to Roosevelt lake
made it 13 miles from the gas station - didn't even get to them

Still riding the KLR? I bought a V STrom last year when I had a 75 mile each way commute every day and the KLR hasn't been ridden much since. I take it out every now and then and it sure is a lot more fun to ride. The V strom is a better machine for long pulls on slab, but the KLR is better for pretty much everything else.

Mine is an '04 (Aztec Red) which has also been faded pink. I used to worry about it and looked into various things to restore the color, now I just don't care.

What happened to generate that oil leak?

05 faded just as bad - tried to paint it but it comes right off - gas leak I didn't bother looking at yet, as that was what the shop was working on so they get to play with it - looks like the case gasket let go to me - I got to call the shop monday and see when I can take it back in.

I've been impressed with the reliability and ease of wrenching the KLR has. Great bikes. Mine hasn't been to a mechanic in years. I need to get it out and ride it more when it warms up again.

looks like it could be a needle and seat in the carb leaking Simple fix.

I have a 2008 KLR , I ride it mostly on payment. But I bought it so I can hit the dirt roads and two tracks . I do all the wrench turning on it . I wonder what broke on your KLR?? I also have a Harly Davison RoadKing I bought brand new when I turned 50. nice to ride but not as much fun as the KLR. I am thinking of trading them both in on a BMW . my hope is to move to AZ. so I can ride alot more . good luck on your KLR:Fire:

Motorcycles are about as addictive as guns and reloading. The aformentioned V STrom is a nice machine and has been rock solid reliable. I rode it to Fort Knox for some training last summer, about 600 miles each way. No way I could've done it on a KLR without being real beat up at the end of the day (though I have done a 500 mil day or two on it before). The problem is it just isn't that much fun. Fast and efficient and I can pack a whole lot of stuff on it, but it doesn't move me much.

Recently bought a Triumph Bonneville which I had lusted for a long time. I'm really looking forward to getting to know it a whole lot better this Spring. Other bikes will come and go, the KLR will be mine foreverWhen it wears out, I'll do what it takes to rebuild it and keep riding it.

I'm not tough enough to ride in the winter any more, two weeks ago today it was -41 at our shooting range 24 miles East of town, today it's supposed to be + 40 something, but still too cold for me to want to ride, did enough of that when I was younger. The Goldwing is in storage until about April or May depending on the weather. If I don't ride it more than I did this past summer, maybe a hundred miles, I'm going to sell it and put the money into one of my old Ford trucks.

I HOPE that your petcock didn't stick open and flood the crank case with gasoline.:( I had that happen with my KLR, but I saw the puddle and investigated prior to starting the engine.

It's a new manual Petcock, but no that's not the problem as I was riding it when it acted up.

I had problems after a few years with the stok petcock, and replaced it with a manual one. It was maybe a 20 minute job (a petcock from a Yamaha 660 Raptor is a drop in fit on the KLR) and it has never had a fuel problem since. Brand new, the Raptor petcock cost $27.

I've never ridden a dirt bike, except for a honda 50 when I was a kid. That really didn't work out too well,as the 2 trees were closer that I thought.I would think the style of riding is considerably different. It appears to be lots of fun.

That KLR isn't really a dirt bike, liquid cooled and really too heavy to be a real serious off road machine but it'll sure go places conventional motorcycles won't even dream about. I've never put mine to a real off road test, but a lot of back country dirt roads and tank trails. The good news is you can put it on the highway and ride 75-80 MPH as long as you need to as well. They truly are wonderful machines.

I've always had a thing for speed when it came to my choice in bikes but the KLR is one that I miss the most. I loved that bike and never should have sold it.

I do hear the DR is nice and might have to try one out on as my next bike. Only thing I don't think I would like about them is the small gas tank.

This was my last bike that I sold 2 years ago. Turbo charged and made 470 HP at the rear wheel and was easily capable of 200+ MPH. The most fun I ever had on 2 wheels.

Sorry bout yer klr. I see by the pics you use it as intended. I would also prefer the utility of your enduro over speed & shine, but that's just me. Hope ya giter runnin soon.

I have a DR and you can get a replacement tank. I think a Safari is 5+ gallons and an Acerbis is 6+. Both throw the balance off slightly in my opinion. I need to get off every couple of hours any way but I hit reserve on my DR @ 120 miles or so. Occasionally I would like a bigger tank but I can pack a gallon container and would find it rare to be 200 miles between fillups.

That would smart, the KLR650 is a dual sport meaning it's capable of on or off road riding - I've done 700 mile day but to be honest the last 1/2 hour I was standing on the pegs 'cuz my butt hurt from the stock seat. Here's a funny video about the KLR for ya.

bought a stinger bike carrier
http://www.cyclegear.com/CycleGear/Accessories/Transport-%26-Storage/Carriers-%26-Haulers/brand/TRACKSIDE/Motorcycle-Carrier/p/43630_00000
Thing sways like a sapling in a storm. But it worked.

Dropped it off, he called said it's not leaking gas now?
If it was the needle valve why did it leak oil?
He's going to check it out and call me next week. :???:

She's back - on KLR's their is a spring for tension of internal chain - called the "dohicky" - had the Doohicky done and we found gas would seep into the float so new float in the carb. Now to have some fun 'cuz the weather's nice.
