Does anyone have a good way of removing lead from a really heavy
leaded barrel? Have tried everything from lead solvents to filling
barrel with mercury and soaking for a week. Its coming out slowly,
but at this pace, I'll be at it for months. I seem to remember seeing
a fix buy using vinegar and peroxid I think.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Denny

Keepthe peroxide away from a firearm. Go to the grocery store, and get some Chore Boy scrub pads, the copper looking ones. Wrap some strands of this around a brass cleaning jag, and have at it. It will clean up fast.

if you have murcury for a week and the lead is still there then its not lead 24--48 hours is all you need for lead you should have lead floating on the mercury and if not you heve some
other problum
you might try simple green it is a super cleaner you can get itat home depot, lowes
and some super markets use it with chore boy as per WAKSUPI ABOVE

got to agree with testshop ive done the mercury thing it sure doesnt take a week. More like overnight. Id about bet your dealing with some copper fouling that was under the lead and probably was the cause of the leading. Get some jb bore paste and follow the instructions on the container. Jb works!!

Use the chore boy scrub pads wrapped around your bore brush for a tight fit. Lead removal takes about 1 minute. Does not hurt bore in any way. thanks Jim

Try some Ed's Red it will cut copper and carbon and float led out of a barrel. IF YOU USE THE VINEGAR AND PEROXIDE DON'T LET IT SOAK MORE THAN ABOUT 15 MINUETS AND REMOVE IT THEN OIL THE BORE. Copper Chore Boy pads will leave copper in the bore.

Just last Saturday I used the Chore Boy copper pad technique for the first time and it worked out just fine. One hint, to unravel the Chore Boy pad, snip the dab of epoxy that holds the pad together, unroll the pad (similar to unrolling a sock) so that you are left with a tube shaped woven copper contraption. At either end you will find a loose copper thread, pull on it and the Chore Boy pad will unravel just like a knitted sweater. Wrap a 12" strand of the copper around a cleaning bursh, dip the brush/copper strand in some Hoppe's Bench Rest copper/lead fouling remover and scrub the bore.

I use Ed's Red followed by bronze wool on a brush. Usually comes out in chunks and slivers. I've gradually upped my dameters and I'm seldom bothered by it now./beagle

What about using the old tried and true method- the Lewis lead remover then JB bore cleaner and Kroil or Gibbs? I agree that there probably is some copper under all that lead. If so, some good old Sweets copper and crud remover should do it. Just follow that up with JB. Be safe out there!

Just to second (or third) the previous comments, be really careful with the vinegar and peroxide method, I pitted the heck out of a nice barrel trying that when I first started shooting lead. Some steels just don't take it well at all.

Thanks guys for the info. This one is a .30 cal 28 inch barrel, so the lewis lead remover
would be kind of hard to use. I think your right about it being something other than
lead. This was a used Pedersoli rifle that was rechambered to 30/40 Krag, and who
knows what the hell the last guy put thru it. I'll get it out in due time I guess.

The Foul Out plating system removes lead ultra fast. There are plans
to build a homebrewed version on the web, but I use the real thing
Outers brand. Works great on copper and nickel, too.

Chore Boy also has a "stainless steel" wool pad. Would this be ok to use like the bronze or copper?
Anyone try it? I found it at a Walmart.

Copper and bronze are softer than your Barrel. Stainless probably isn't. It depends on whether you like your gun or are heading to a gun show. Gianni
