Anyone have any knowledge of a C. Sharps 40-70 where the cases are formed from 30-40 Kraig [sp].
My first thought is that the case capasity is a lot smaller that a care formed from from a 45-70 case ??
Please excuse my total lack of knowledge on these type of weapons

From my research 40-70 Sharps Straight can be formed from 30-40 kraig or 405 win brass depending on chamber cut. There is a diffrence in rim thickness between the 2. There is also a 40- 65 win can be formed from 45-70 brass. Dan Pharis came up with a 40-70 bottle neck bases on the 45-70 case also.

Wayne, I have a rifle built on the Falling Block Works action chambered for the forty Krag. The case is similar if not identical to the old 40 Maynard. You can form cases from Krag cases of course but unless you are going to shoot black powder you can use 303 British case which is far more common. The formed cases will be a bit shorter than the Krag. When I bought the rifle I didn't know Krag brass was so hard to find. To form the case I first anneal it, prime it, put in eleven grains of unique, then fill the case with corn meal, stuff a napkin wad over the corn meal, chamber the case and fire. Works every time.

In my reply I should have said that the 40 Krag is similar to the 40-60 but not the 40-70 Maynard.
