im thinking about picking up the lyman 358315 204 gr mold to cast and load in my 35 marlin anyone have experience /data for this bullet they care to share? right now I have 2 1/2 (was 3) boxes of 100 of speer 180 gr jacketed flat nose bullets I picked up at a shop as new old stock for 17$ a box but im using them very sparingly being as how there more than double that price anywhere else. i got a really good deal on some brass (in my opinion) from a local classified the other day 215 once fired cases for 50$ . ive experimented with a few different pistol bullets with this caliber .358 158 gr and .358 195 gr but if i could get that 204 gr mold and have 1 good bullet i could load as a hunter or a plinker that would be great. this is a great old rifle in my opinion and its a shame this caliber is dieing off .

I don't have any experience with that bullet but do have with the 35 in a Marlin. With mold quality differences of late I think most would probably suggest the RCBS 200gr FN mold instead. I have the NOE copy of this bullet and so far it works well for me.
I'm curious to see what other Marlin 35 shooters have to say.
Good Luck,
Rick

Sandman -

Howdy !

Lyman's data for the 204RN seemed to me to be spot-on. From memory.... aorund 35.5gr IMR3031.
Their 200gr RN "J"-word load was 1gr more of I3031 ( 36.5gr ), IF memory serves.

Please take a look @ the Lyman cast handbook data, for .35Rem loads.

With regards,

Sandman, that's the first mold I ever bought when I started handloading for my uncle's 35 Remington. I had never heard of this website and knew virtually nothing about casting my own except for what a couple of other folks told me. My first loads were using either 3031 or Winchester 748 powder. I don't remember, and no longer have records of the data I used, but they were some mid-range loads out of the Hornady manual that I had at the time. The results were good, but later on I sold the mold after I got my RCBS 200. I was loading for a few 35's by then, and thought I needed a flatnose boolit. Looking back on it, both molds threw a great boolit for the 35. Round or flat nose doesn't seem to make any difference in those Marlins in my experience. I like 357Mag's comment about data, by the way.

I have both molds, but I can say the RCBS 35-200-FN always works real good in the Marlin 35 Remington. That is what I used this year to shoot a nice buck at 75 yards.

I experimented with 4064, 3031, and 748 with the Lyman boolit (sized to .359). My rifle definately preferred 748, easily besting the tightest groups I could get with either of the other two. It cycles/feeds through my rifle slick as grease and can shoot a hair under 1 inch at 50 yds. It's my go-to hog rifle.

Experimenting with component combo's is part of the fun. Enjoy the journey and Good luck.

You will be much better off with the RCBS 35-200-FN bullet for use in your 35 Rem.. The long rounded, unsupported nose of the 358315 is not conducive to best accuracy over 1700 fps. I gave up on that bullet, went to the RCBS and there is no looking back.

Sandman, I don't know the dimensions of Lyman's current production but about 20 years ago I bought a used 358315 and the nose was seriously undersize. It is always a crapshoot when buying used molds. I got the RCBS 35-200-FN and am real happy with it. Gotten several deer and an antelope with it in a Marlin 336SC in 35 Remington.
