I'm not sure about a 3" barrel but I run these with 12 to 13 gr Allient 2400, CCI SPPs, Mixed .357 mag brass in my Pre-27 S&W
(6" Barrel) which is a pretty hot load for me but no pressure signs and excellent accuracy.

Are these home cast or commercial boolits?

Hi,I use 5.5 Grains Herco in 357 Mag. brass or, for something snappier, 6 Grains Unique. In 38 Special brass 4.0/4.5 grains Unique or the "old favorite"3.5 grains Bullseye, are good plinkers.Enjoy,Mike.
I am sizing at .359 plus White label 50/50 lube ,this info is with the Lee RNFP,range scrap lead, and you use at your own discretion.Same exact gun.

5g Unique or 4.5g Bullseye gives a good firm 980 fps thump in my 4" Service Six using 38 special cases. This is slightly pushing it in a 38 special revolver, but for a 357, especially a beefy Ruger it's just starting to feel good. If you want to use 357 cases, you can add another grain and really feel it. Power Pistol (8g works well for me) or Blue Dot will give you the best punch along with a good sized muzzle blast.

PP or Blue Dot are your thumper powders, but don't overlook Bullseye.
5.3 grains in a .357 case is almost 1000 fps, and there's room to go higher.
hp38 charges are very similar to BE–also makes a good 9mm powder, I have about 5 lbs :)

is it true that i should keep speeds under 1000 fps or i will most likely get leading w/out a GC? if thats the case ill just load 38 until i get some jhp. thanks for the replies folks.

Using Alliant's data for PP, 5.4 gr with 158 Lee RNFP in 38 cases logged 888fps avg from 3" SP101. 6gr PP logged 970 fps. Have some 8gr PP (357 brass) loaded but have not chrono'd any yet.

I've been loading blue dot lately. 10 grains with a 158 rnfp bullet it's very accurate for me. I shot a bunch yesterday. If you come across any 2400 try that I prefer that over blue dot any day but use what you have. These are shot out of a smith 686 6 inch.

is it true that i should keep speeds under 1000 fps or i will most likely get leading w/out a GC? Not really. I've shot the Lee 358-105SWC at 1400 fps out of my .357 with no significant leading. AS long as the fit is good, they can be pushed pretty hard.

nixpap,
Have you gone through the measurement ritual with your Ruger; slug the barrel, measure cylinder throats?
If the bullet fits you should be able to get 1300 plus ft/sec. with a good lube. (Might be a little less in a 3 incher).
Try that Blue Dot load Warner mentioned.

I load that bullet over 16 grains of H110. I get around 1350 fps with that load out of my 4" GP100.

I couldn't accuracy from my 6"Ruger security-six, with 160gr rnfp, until I got up to 12 gr of 2400.
Not max load but not far from it.

nope, haven't done the ritual yet. afraid to bang on my gun and too cheap to pay someone to do what is probably a 10 min job. ill work up to it...just using LLA right now.

I'm using 12gr 2400, but I'm cheating and using PB gas checks.
4gr Bullseye in 38spl.
If its the Lee boolit its a great shooting boolit and great performance on deer.
