View Full Version : Shooting targets

I have been reading here for several years about various members shooting cast at targets and the usual distance is 25-50 yards.
Other than Larry Gibson do we have members that regulary shoot 100 and beyond?
What kind of groups do you get at say 200 and 300?
My old eyes aren't that good any more and with open sights on a 100 year old Milsurp rifle I am getting 4 inch groups ( good enough for a kill shot if I hunted).
With a scope and a special 1-14 twist Israelli Mauser I have I can hold 4inch groups at 500 yards. All of this with cast.
Am I fooling myself for trying to get distance or should I just be happy with 100 yards?

I am not a rifle guy, but I can shoot 85 or better on the 50 yard target with my cast 45ACP out to 100 yards. the 8 ring is about 7 inches and this is conventional pistol style (one hand). I do not do it often but it is fun to try.

I see no reason why you rifle folks shouldn't try to reach out to 1000 yards with the right tool and your cast boolits.

It's the satisfaction of attempting a difficult task, and succeeding. One must make their own definition of 'succeeding', but once one achieves that goal, there is nothing to say that one cannot re-define 'success', and shoot for smaller groups.

I bet some don't have access to a range with distances longer than 50 yards.

I rarely shoot on targets past 100 because I just don't care to. Now a steel plate at 300, that I will shoot.

I tend to be more of a pinker with handguns and much of my rifle shooting is offhand. I doubt 1 percent of the rounds I fired in the last 5 years was from a bench. Probably more like .01 percent.

I have a portable bench on my back deck.i shoot 100yards all the time rifle and pistol.i ve shot some sub moa with my long guns but most are 1.5 to 2.5 in. I also have a 200 yard target but don't do that well on it,but im still trying.i have a steel plate hanging at 100 its 12x12" its fun to make it ring with my pistols.

new load 50 yards, after that- 100+
I used to regularly shoot 44 magnum (7-1/2 Redhawk)
at 100yards. I Was going through 500 rounds a week then and could keep 5 out of 6 on a
beer can off hand @100 yards. Not anymore :(

We shoot out to 400yds on my buddy's place. Never on paper beyond 200 and that is rare in itself. We usually have a backer set up at 50 and 100yds the rest are active targets and gongs.

That's subMOA and that is great shooting!! Are you shooting from a bench? I can usually match your open sight numbers. I shoot from field positions (standing, sitting, and prone) the way God and Uncle Sam said we should.:bigsmyl2:
Where do you shoot in SoCal? I have a Mauser action I want to build and would love to see your rifle.

I do all my rifle testing with CB's at 40 yards at home the head to the club for sighting in at 100. I would sight at 200 if I could with certain one of my CB rifles. Two weeks ago I tested my new Rem 770 scoped 308 at 100 yards with the Lee 160 gr RNGC and the first group was 4 of 5 touching (the other 1 inch away) but unfortunately 8" low with the scope pegged out. Next week I test it with shims in the scope mount to see if it will repeat. If it does, it will be sighted at 200 one way or another.

There are but two 100 yd. rifle ranges immediately available to me. Scoped rifles are a bore at 100 yds.

On the other hand, iron sight bolt action mil-surps are a joy for me at 75yd. to 100 yds. I cannot say that I am frustrated because of the 100 yd. limit. Rather, I give thanks that my un-bespectaled eyes allow me to see the fore sight and distant target without too much ado on a bright, clear and sunny day. Don't really know how well my No.1 Mk.III and I would perform beyond 100 yds.

No matter, the guys with their Mount Palomar optics atop some over priced, big box store-bought rifle are a source of satisfying humor seen only at a public range. Ahhh, cast boolit, iron sight mil-surps poking 3" to 3.5" groups [on a good day;)] into a paper target at 100 yards all the while those 'other guys' struggle to make a 3" group with multi knobbed, battery powered telescopes.

I like to test at 100metres. I have been caught out before with a load that looked great at 50 metres but was obviously not stable at 100metres. For ultralight plinking loads and new shooters however 25metres is fine.

I brought a set of cast boolit/18 gr. 2400 loaded .30-06 to a couple of our local military rifle matches. The whole match is shot from the 200-yard line.

Everybody else was using full-bore military loads and I was there with my 1903A3, so it was WHAM! WHAM! WHAM! with the other guys and my '03 went 'pop!' and a hole appeared in the target. The handloads helped the scores because they didn't push me all out of position on the rapid fire strings. Faster recovery helps the group.

The rifle line at our club range has berms at 50M, 100M, 200M, and 300M with steel swingers at 200M and 300M. Working up CB loads, I usually start at 50M to determine rough sight settings then move to 100M for 'groups'. After I've established that a load meets my personal standard of accuracy...usually 2"-3" for my milsurps...I do most of my shooting at 200m - both paper and steel.

Shooting my BPCRs for fun...I don't compete 'cause the nearest range holding regular matches is two hours away and they only shoot once a month...everything is 200M or 300M off cross-sticks.

this far enough out for ya?
the near ridge is 800 yds at the top, there is a second ridge behind that, and then the big bluff behind that.
the benches are facing left because that's the long way's targets.
at the actual range we generally shoot 300 yds with cast just to hear the 8" squares, and bowling pin cut-outs, go ding.

It doesn't matter how far it is! Shooting stuff is fun.

Shoot pistol IHMSA with Cast only for years. 44mag and 30-30, favorite load for the 30-30 was a RCBS 165-SIL and I THINK 16grs of 2400. I was shooting in the high 30's with that load (best I shot, just looked was 39 out of 40). That was 50m to 200m.

Don't think I could do that know, my eyes are not what they used to be. :(

One of the ranges I belong to has positions at 25 yds, 25 meters, 50 yds, 50 meters, 100 yds, 100 meters.

The NRA small bore matches will be held there this summer.

I shot silhouette for 30 years, last 25 of that with cast only. That's many, many thousands of boolits out to 200 meters. Between age & diabetes I had to give it up, just couldn't see well enough to be competitive. Only two things were tough to see really, the sights & the targets.

jcwit, I just checked the NRA web site for the championship schedule and it said dates & location TBA.
