I have often thought about going to cast even in my self defense rounds. Who here uses cast in there concealed carry gun or for self defense? And if so what caliber and bullet style are you shooting.

I currently use 88gr Remington JHP in my .380 but I am switching to a .357 with a 158gr SWC HP ( 5 BHN ) made by Rim Rock bullets. Hope to find or have a mold made so that I can cast these myself in the future. I like to practice with the identical round that I carry.

Since there are several threads and I've been hammered for the ''other legal actions after they decide you're right''. I'll skip over that.

A 158 gr boolit in a 380, hmmm Police Positive I hope and not an ACP?

9mm get 358-125 RNFP, 38/357 gets 358-158 RNFP,40 gets 401-175TC and the 45 Colts get the 452-255 RNFP.

Lead for every use. I like Miha's hp molds, and also NOE. I use 32acp, 9mm, 357, 44 spcl, 44 mag, 45 acp. I have used a lot of different styles from WC to RN to HP.

In 357 I have gone as heavy as 200 gr. (lymans) -- I have resisted using the ole lincoln logs (230 gr wc) but they would work too.

Lots of choices, lots to experiment with. To get reliable expansion I need to be going over 1000 fps so that plays a part in boolit choice. For faster reloads in a revolver I like something with a little curvature, but for the first 5 or 6 a wadcutter is nice.

What an open ended question.

Just realize you might have penetration (over) problems and don't rely upon expansion.

Make sure all your rounds chamber and go boom.

In a 1911 or Smith M&P .45, I use these from Magnus. I think it is the old Saeco mold. 215 grs. soft lead over a healthy dose of 231.

The BD 45 was a group buy mold several years ago. Basically an RCBS 45-230 CM flat nose with a crimp groove. I use it in 45 Colt, doesn't feed in my 1911's but does for some other users.

Not sure if it was cast or swaged but for a few years I carried the old 158 grn Nyclad loading in a J frame. Were accurate and in limited testing seemed to expand. With the nylon coating no leading or fouling.

I don't use cast in my carry guns as I have plenty of factory ammo or factory bullets designed for self-defense. So, there is no incentive to use cast until I run out of factory loads/bullets.

Whatever floats your boat. It is a monthly "argument" that has been beaten to death.

Actually, what other people use is nearly useless information unless you know why. So the better question is "What caliber and bullet do you use for self-defense and why?"

For example, I have a gun/caliber I use for "light concealed carry", another for "normal concealed carry" and still another for "exposed carry". YMMV.

I see your point I have been thinking of casting HP or WFN for my S&W airweight 38 and my glock 27. I am really just looking for a reason to buy more molds lol
