Hey Guys,
Have you ever returned a mold to Lyman?
I bought a Lyman 311284 mold from Midsouth
a couple weeks ago, and it was way under size.
Both cavities were not even the same. One
was .308 with a .299 nose, and the other was
.310 with a .300 nose.
I contacted Lyman and was told to return it.
A couple weeks latter, I recieved a new mold
and headed for the pot. Well at least there both
the same size, but still not right. They drop at
.3095 with a .2995 nose. Whats up with there
qc? I guess I'll try to use it as is, but I won't go
thru the hassel of returning it again. Anybody
else have problems with Lyman?
Thanks for letting me rant.

how big did you want it to cast? The 311291 GB mold might be a perfect fit since it came out more like a 313291

No, you've got a great mould! You just need to get a K-31 to go with it. The ideal boolit for that carbine would have the body sized at .308", a short body seated almost flush with the neck, and a long skinny bore rider nose in the .296-.300" diameter range.

Leadhead, beagle it. I've done some just very recently. They are 217sih grains, .301 on the body, and .310-.314 on the drive bands. Not perxacterly round but large enough to do something with. Mine, which I had for years, suffers to same affliction as yours -- skinny nose.

Never thought of the K31. I have one thats been sitting in the safe for awhile now,
and have been looking for a boolit to fit it. Thanks for the reminder Ricochet.
I thought that mold would drop at .311 or .312 dia.

Leadhead,
Blammer is hunting until Monday. Then the order for the group buy NEI 311284 will go in. If you're still interested in a top quality representation of that design that runs .3015 on the nose and .311-.312 on the driving bands you might want to PM him immediately. The group buy is closed but he might be benevolent if you whine enough.

I have returned two moulds to Lyman. The first was for my 45-70, the cavities were out of line. The mould measured .008 more across the mould marks than it did the opposite them. The second was a 311291,out of line and way to small. That one was replaced with one that was the right size but the cavities were rough. It looked like the cutter had been sharpened on an 80 grit grinder, it should have been returned. I have also sent several reloading dies back. Although it is a pain, I have to say that they all were replaced no questions asked.

On the other hand I recently ordered an 8mm mould. It is the right size, beautifully finished cavities and pours consistant bullets. I have a good bit of their tools and dies have not had any other problems.I guess they can make a mess once in a while like everyone else. At least they will try to fix it.

Leadhead I bought one at about the same time you did from MidSouth and mine measures
.308 to .309 on the bands and about .2995 on the nose. I wasn't real impressed with the numbers, but both my 03A3s seemed to love it. One especially, 24 grains of IMR 4227 and FWFL gave me one ragged hole groups at fifty and one inch groups at one hundred. Also, about the same at fifty with 12 grains of Unique. The mould was finished well and the bullets dropped effortlessly. I kinda was expecting a couple of thousands larger, but I'll just beagle it if I need a little bigger version later. As for now, I couldn't be happier with the performance.

The day I was testing these loads, a friend came along to the range with me. He wanted to sight in his Winchester .300 WSM complete with a massive scope. He managed 1.5 inch groups with his factory loads at 100. I couldn't help but smile when my old war horses wearing irons shot such nice groups. A fun day for sure accompanied with some good nature ribbing. Another cool thing is this guy is a dealer and sold me one of the 03A3s and at the time asked my why I liked these old things so much. I guess he now knows.

OK Keith, Thanks for the info. I have some loaded for a model 17 Remington with a
fair bore, but won't be able to get to the range for a couple days.
