Having a hard time with finding starting loads for cast in my 308. Looking to build up to a 200yd deer shot. I own the 150gn mold and have some of each to play with to see if I want to order one of the other molds.

I have 150gr lee flat nose, 165 gr rcbs sil, and lee 180gr rn to try. I have a bunch of 3031.

Have not been able to get one of the lyman cast books that has these in it. Mine is too old.

Will someone give me some low high ranges for these bullets? Also, which one would you use for southern deer? Heck, if you would not use one of these just let me know what you would use.

I'd go with 28 grs and a tuft of Dacron as a starting point for the 3031 with any of your boolits.
the lee boolits are the ones I'd work with for hunting, and keep shots more in the 100-150 yd range.
you'll have about 5 moa of drop from 100 to 200 yds.

Agreed! I have used that load. 27 grains 3031 provided an almost identical trajectory and point of impact at 75 yards as 21 grains of 4198. Accuracy was identical and consistent amongst several days of playing around learning powder speeds in the 308 case. So, 28 grains of 3031 should provide the same comparative effect. ... felix

I start every full sized rifle with 16 gr of 2400. Work up until accuracy starts falling off.

Sorry, just reread OP. I didn't catch the 3031

Old manuals are still a great resource, as is this web site. Cast boolits such as the ones listed above, using the stated powder and working up from the available manual is a great starting point. Knowing the proper sizing for your bore, using reputable lube, and assembling your cartridges to fit your rifle chamber will put you well on your way to wringing out the utmost accuracy. Work up slowly and watch for the sweet spot for your rifle. The .308 is a great cast caliber, good luck with your quest!
