My first buck taken with a cast boolit. Used a Lee 450-200-1R, paper patched, from a CVA Optima Elite 45 ML, from about 60 yards. Boolit broke the spine, exited low on the rib cage behind the opposite shoulder.

Nice, feels good doesn't it? That's a big 4 point. Got a pic of the paper patched bullet? Alloy?

He went down right where I shot him. I hit about 3 inches higher than where I was aiming, hence the spine hit. I just started wearing glasses for distance vision, and I haven't practiced enough iron sights shooting with them yet. I made almost exactly the same shot with my 30-30 on a doe a few weeks after getting the buck, and did exactly the same thing with her: Spine shot, about 3 inches too high. Saves some tracking, but it's not exactly textbook shooting.

Sorry, no pics of the boolit. All of the boolits are in my muzzleloader kit at my cabin. Used pure lead, and about two wraps of cigarette paper around the groove area.

Great job! I took a lot of game with the same rifle (in .50 cal) when I lived in GA. Very accurate.

So you used cigarette paper for your "patch" for the slug? Sorry, the only muzzleloader I ever owned a traditional style that shot round balls. Didn't think cigarette paper was thick enough for such duty.

Greetings and Congradulations !
That is a great way to start out with your own home made boolits. There is nothing wrong with a spine shot. With a very accurate load and the confidence you can do it I would prefer not to have to get scurrying about looking for crimson stains of foliage.
Keep-er shooting. I am sure the farmers and vehicle insurance companies are all smiles.

I've experimented with masking tape, cigarette paper, office paper, newspaper. How much wrap is needed is based on the size of the cast and the paper thickness. I found that with this particular boolit, as cast, with too wraps of cigarette paper, I get modest resistant when stuffing the boolit down the barrel. A snug fit, but not a tight fit. Groups well when I shoot it, which is all I care about.

I switched to Blackhorn 209 from Pyrodex a couple of years ago. Absolutely love that powder. Couldn't be any easier to work with, as long as you have the right primers. I usually load 80 to 90 grains by volume.

A very under-rated gun, in my opinion. Too bad CVA dropped it so quickly in favor of the Accura. Makes it much harder to find barrels, and the chances of ever getting really fun calibers like 357 max/mag are pretty much nil at this point.
