I finally found a 35 Whelen that appealed to me (1:14 twist) x 24" barrel on a Mauser 98 action....
so here we go again....:)
I need some advice as to reloading for cast....currently my older Lyman manual has NO information for 35 Whelen so I will either have to buy a newer version or?
if you have experience with 35 Whelen using cast let me know your thoughts and recommendations....
thanks

89733I found 18.5 grs of 2400 under a 200 gr Lee RNGC made one-hole groups @ 25 yards. Haven't been out since...
(That's 5 rounds)

I'd be curious to see 100 and 200 yard targets.

The RCBS 200 grain FN for the .35 Remington works great in the .35 Whelen. Accurate and a great hunting bullet with that big flat nose. Any load that runs 1750-2000 FPS will work fine.

I also have a 1:14 Mauser 98, re-bored to 35 Whelen. The original military barrel is still on there with sights and parkerized finish. I have found that this Mauser struggled to feed blunt nosed cast well for me. I have used the 250grain Cast Bullet Engineering and the RCBS 200grain flat point, and for plinkers the Lee 158grain RNFP and RN plain base. I have difficulty getting more than one cartridge to feed from the magazine compared to jacketed spire points where in the full four will feed well.
The rifle does shoot the cast well, from memory the best has been a 1 1/2 inch 100metre group using the 250grain and 40.5grains AR2206h (H4895) for 1880fps.

Here are a couple of my threads using this mauser:

For data there is plenty of data in the ADI or Hodgdon free pdf downloads. I have been using the Jacketed data for 35 whelen, slightly reduced. THe Lyman 4th Cast Handbook only has data for the 198 and 204grain cast loads, nothing heavier.

I will advise you to make up at least two dummy rounds to check for feeding issues from both sides of the magazine before you load a bunch. My 98 Mauser in .35 Whelen will not feed the Lyman 358627 SWC.

I have not tried any from the RCBS 200FN yet, when I started having trouble with my knee and back I kind of lost interest.

Try accurate molds 36 275 E. A heavy weight that feeds ok in my VZ-24 mauser 98

I asked a similar question about the 1 in 14 twist the other day and was pleased to find out the general consensus was it was good to go from 2oo gr. boolits and less all the way thru the 300 grainer's. 4759 has been a good powder with a dacron filler for 1800 to
2200 fps. H4895 has been a good powder too with dacron fillers in the light loads, also in heavier loads with more case fill without a filler. This was with 200 and 235 grain boolits. I believe the Lyman 48th edition shows 4759 starting with 24 grains and 33 grains is still a bit below max with 200 grain range boolits. 3031 has also showed promise in my rifle.
As mentioned in a post above 40 grains of h4895 was a good starting point and was accurate in my rifle with 200 grain boolits. I used a flller till i hit about 85% case fill with both 4895 and 3031. I may be wrong about the 48th lyman manual it's the new one
(49th maybe?) has cast information on the whelen with powders up thru 3031 with 200grain boolits so it's a good reference point. Sorry for the confusion on the manuals but i'm not at home right now so can't check....Good luck with a fine cal. choice.

the saeco #248 will feed from a magazine without a hitch.
it comes in around 250-260 grs and will handle velocity's into the 25-2600 fps area just fine.
ror you could do a throat impact and base a custom [215-235gr] boolit from accurate molds based on your measurements.
then you could do just about anything from 1200 fps through near jaxketed velocity's with the one boolit.

i'd look to the slower powders if you want the higher velocity's [i use RL-19 in my 358 win]

I am puzzled....I looked up the saeco mold chart and there is no listing for a number #248....
Am I missing something here?
thanks
