First off, congrats to all on your first cast kills. I will be attempting to take my first deer with cast this January (actually fist deer in over 20 years). The Rifle will be my M95/34 Steyr. The round a Lee C338-220-1R, GC, sized .334, lubed with 45/45/10, in front of 17.5 G of 2400. I wish I had a Chrono to get a Idea of the velocity, but that is not in the budget. This load is shooting a 3” group off my shooting sticks at 100 yds, but may be maxed out ( primers appear to be backing out a bit, at 18g ). I plan on making up some of BruceB’s soft points and no shots over 100 Yds. I guess the question is, Do you think I will have sufficient killing power, at this distance, with this load?.
Thanks Tony

With a boolit as large as 220 gr., you only really need a terminal velocity of about 1000 fps in my opinion for what it is worth. If your 338 rifle is anything like mine, however, it won't stabilize that boolit at any MV under 1650 so that will already put you over what is necessary to do the job at 100 yards. At an MV of 1700, it will be a joy to shoot all day without recoil protection.

I loaded up some of lees boolits in my 338 win mag this year. 24 gr of 2400 got me 1775 fps. My alloy is pretty soft, about 10 or 11 bhn. Wanted to shoot a deer with just to see how it did. I like a flat nose or a HP for hunting but figured if I put this in the right spot it would work. I didn't get to shoot a deer with it but my buddy shot a big male coyote and after seeing the performance I'm no longer afraid to shoot a deer with it.
I'm not sure of the capacity on your case but in my 8mm Mauser with the lee 175 gr I get a little above 1700 with 17 gr of 2400.
If your boolits are cast no harder than 50/50 they probably won't need to be soft nosed IMO.
They only deer I shot at so far this year was at 30 yds and I opted to use my 45 colt.

When did they make center fire rifle legal in Iowa for deer? First I've heard of it.

Late clean up season In the lower two counties. My and my brothers sons talked us into hunting it this year. The idea of bagging one with one of my old mil-surps and my own cast boolit was just too interesting to pass up. By the way the reason for the pistol grip is the loss of much of the range of motion in my right wrist. I would have used my a303 but the pistol grip works much better in the field.

Wolfer, I was debating with myself on the 50/50 vrs the soft nose. I opted for the soft nose over straight ww as it shoots so good in my gun.

Thanks Larry, hoping for a positive result, in a easy spot to drag out of. I have not drug a Deer in 20+ years and do not supposes they have gotten lighter.
