I took this WV 6 point first Monday of buck season,

50-70 SSK 14" contender, 465 grn lbt at 25yds or so.

I missed the first shot but didn't realize it but his mistake was hanging around for a few more seconds for shot #2

Thanks89426

Congrats, I got my first Contender deer this year. Should be good eating.
What was the load on the 50-70 and bullet weight?

Good job axman.Sounds like you were surprised when he didn't go down on the first one. Good recovery cause that was definitly a pressure situation with a single shot trying to get a second shot off.

28 grns accurate 5744, 465grn lbt air cooled w-wts
Checked it with chrony once. 1100fps with 14fps from high to low.

I was in ground blind and he was on to me before 1st shot and I got excited I guess.

This bbl is throated for 750grn 50bmg bullets but I once shot 5 into 7/8" at 25yds and 5 into 2" at 50yds with this load.

Shooting game is a lot different that from a good rest on bench.

Thanks

Greetings and Congradulations !
That is a fine read and good picture of another corn cruncher that finally has a real purpose.
That is not much different than 50-70 carbine with 3F. That would probably go through 3 bucks.
Popping them with a handgun sure is a pleasurable way to hunt.
I shoot 5744 in my 50-70's and the 50-95 . So far only more accurate load is 3F and that is going to be hard top beat. Maybe one day in ILLinois will get to use BPC on them pesky field forragers.

I was just giving you a hard time game has a way of taking us out of our calm demeanor. I suspect his is great thing if I ever loose that feeling I am done hunting because it is great feeling.

That is a great hammer of bullet.

All taken in stride, no one likes to miss and 1st shot results would be nice and are to be strived for but in the real world it doesn't always happen.

I hunted at Ross Seyfrieds place a couple of times and he told me that a lot of people tend to shoot high on game, his advice was to shoot lower than you might think sometimes.

Thanks fellas.

50-70 in a Contender? How is the kick? Nice job on recovering from 1st shot snafu. You hunted at Ross Seyfried's place? That would be cool.

Good job with the 50-70! I hunt with one also but mine is a full length version. Like Mike said, the cartridge is a good one. Lots of penetration and no need for expansion.

Not sure what you mean by full length version.
This is a 1 3/4" case length.
Thanks

You ever shot game with 750 gr? I just got a 15" encore SSK 50 American Eagle barrel. Looking for bullet suggestions?
Thanks,

Sorry for the lack of clarity. I use a 50-70 rifle, specifically an 1866 Trapdoor. Mine has been "sporterized" by me and the thread is here,
