What are your favorite features that you want to see on here? I am working on getting another "Today" feature going, and possibly adding a few "Boolit" smilies on here too
Let me know!

"Today" is good. Is it possible to "detect" lurkers and list their identity, if registered? Nice to know who's reading over your shoulder, waiting for you to mis-spell a word...

Not at all. I was specifically thinking about CarpetMan lurking around reading the posts, but he won't post anymore. He sends me his comments by email sometimes. I wish he would post them, it was more fun then.

I agree. I always liked his humor. A little on the dry side. :) Who knows, maybe he'll show up.

How about some Navigation shortcuts on each page? That is, a link to Cast Boolit, or Lever Action or any of the other sub-groups you cater to on this site?
(Boy, I got a big lead on Buckshot in number of posts here. I don't think he's even registered yet)
Most every page does have shortcuts, if you look close to the bottom, you see a "Jump To" with a form following that, it links to every thread.

Not as nice as a word you can just click on, but we'll use what we got, I guess. Next request. Did I forget the $100 sign-up bonus? How about email addresses? Shooters used to let you get an email address through them. Would be nice...

How about resolving the copyright matter. Who owns the copyright to the posts, the poster or some other entity?

I hope the today thing gets up and running. As it is, it takes me half an hour with my slow connection just to read what few posts have been made since my last visit. Once people get up and posting full speed, there is no way I could keep up with things at this rate.
I have unbounded faith in our fearless leaders! Thanks, guys!

Er.. $100 sign on bonus.. Your checks in the mail :D
The Poster ALWAYS has the copyright on his own material, I will make that clear at the bottom of every page.
The "Today" feature is a bit more complicated than expected, but I hope in a very short time it can come about, I know that it is very important and it is my #1 goal to get going at this point.

...............A TODAY FEATURE , I know zip point zero to the 14th decimal place about programing or what headaches are involved, what features are even do-able. But I think we were all pretty satisfied with how the people at Shooters.com had it. So by level of desire:
1) Choice to view by chronological, or thread
2) A 'Today' list from a selected date. Ie: enter a paste date and it's chronlogical from then to now.
3) A 'Today' that's truly today. Ie: shows everything for 3-19, or 2-24, (enter date)
4) A 'Today' good for the current date

These!! :D  8) One feature I would like to see (and I know it's probably not possible) is photo hosting. I hate looking through old posts and not be able to see the pics. Or worse, seeing the wrong pic. I have a spanky new digital camera (Fuji S3000, of course) and would like to post some pics, but I don't trust the free hosting sites to keep them available. Is a "group buy" possible for web space? Maybe an annual fee for "X" amount of web space? Just thinking out loud. The place looks good and it's easy to use!! Hmmm..... I think I have more posts than Buckshot!!!! That ain't gonna last!! 8)

Still working on getting the "Today" feature going.
I will see what I can do about picture hosting. Usually when hosting pictures, that eats up bandwidth pretty fast, and I really don't like to charge for services... I'll keep you updated.

As long as we're asking, yeah, what Buckshot said!
Oh, and photo hosting with a default size that keeps the photo on screen. No having to adjust the viewing area off to the right to finish a sentence!
I am thinking about buying some image hosting software, would anyone be intrested in buying subscriptions to host images? I can host free images, but for advanced hosting I would have to charge a small fee.. Does this sound reasonable?

YES!!! I would like to KNOW that my pics will stay where I put them and be accessible for as long as I was willing to pay for the storage. Any idea how much $ for how much space??

This is great, Congratulations!
Working search function is a must and this one is pretty handy. "View posts since last visit" is good too for fast checking if You're logged in already.
If You want to search all topics You can do that by using only * as a wildcat for "Search for Author"; This lists all posts in topical listing.
You can limit the results choosing 1day, 7days or something else instead of "All Posts".
You can also lists results as posts (do You call this chronological or smthng?) by selecting "Display results as" to "Posts" instead of "Topics".
If You want to see whole posts in the same listing You can select "Return All available characters of posts". You can pick other word counts as well; 25, 50, 100...
These searches (whole posts for 1day and 7days for example) can be installed to push buttons or links on the top of the page, but I don't know how to do it, maybe phpBB support does. I haven't seen quick searches for previous posts limited by hours, only 1day, 7days etc. But I've seen a drop menu box in the forum index where You simply drop 1day, 7days or else from the box and push Go to get topical listing.
You'll also see that this search will actually find something for You  (unlike Aimoo search at least for me :( ). Just use good search words and limit forums or categories if needed.

The aimoo board only searches for the subject. Can this thing be made to search within the post?
how do you adjust the size of the print?
Finn45

Default is "Search topic title and message text", or You can tick it for "Search message text only". Search for the topic title only is pretty much useless imo.
Btw why was the date function removed from the profile? It would allow everyone to set their own time zone and preferred method for date format. You just need to check Your time zone here:
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/time-zone/usa/
Then You just put correct syntax to date function field and You get "03/21/2005, 08:00 AM" or what ever You like. Well, only when logged in of course.
Finn45

(If you want a place to keep pictures you can get a msn or yahoo group of your own and keep them there. MSN is free, if you fill it up get another. I don’t know what the capacity is but there are a lot of pictures on the BPCR board.)

I'm a chronological type reader. One of the things I really liked at aimoo was being able to go to a forum, put my cursor on the subject heading and there would be a pop up showing the first 100 or so characters of the post. Saved a lot of time deciding which posts interested me and my slow connection.

One thing I liked at Aimoo was being able to run your cursor over a topic and read a paragraph of it without clicking on it. I don't have time to read everything, and that feature allowed me to skip topics that I wasn't interested in if the title was ambiguous. Stan

I echo Stan's suggestion. Having the cursor pop up a snap shot of the topic paragraph is a very unique and valuble tool. That's what I miss most from Aimoo.

Keeping our own copyright in what we write sounds good. But wouldn't have been marvellous if we could have acquired, in searchable form, a CD of all that huge archive of irreplaceable information which existed on the old Shooterstalk boards? It would even have been worth paying money for! Some sort of disclaimer designed to allow this might be a good idea.
Receiving E-mailed copies of replies to a subscribed post is a splendid feature, which I badly missed from Shooterstalk. note, though, that it isn't easy to subscribe, unless you remember it before posting

If I'm not mistaken, we did manage to do that. Several of our cohorts had the capability to download the archives and make them available to the rest of us in CD form. One I know of had the username Misplaced Cajun, or some kind of cajun, anyway...

Lost Cajun had some archives but he took them down when he moved and they may not be available again.
The problem is the users have no control over the entity which runs the board. Shooters was owned by Allvertical, a private for profit corporation which apparently owned the copyrights to the posts. Apparently there was never a formal winding up of the corporation, and it just went away, as many closely held corporations do. Since Allvertical is not around complaining people get away with unauthorized use of the material.
My thought has always been board should be the property of a nonprofit corporation, which would own the copyright to the posted material and give blanket permission for its noncommercial use, with proper attribution.

Fellow shooters,
I have a cd copy of the LCLA (Lost Cajun Lost Archives), When I saw this post I remembered having gotten one. This sent me on a search & rescue mission through the house. Why is it we find things in the last place we look? Anyway, as I remember it is a royal PITA to make work in it's raw form and it took some time (months) to make it more user friendly. I lost my converted 'user friendly" version when I lost a computer. I will attempt this project again and if I get it done before I give up from frustration I will offer it to the group. Please be patient. There are over 11500 topics in the cast bullet section alone. Since that is the one that interest me at the moment it will be the one I work on. The disk also contains zips of the 1911, carbine, garand, reloaded ammo, shuetzen, swede mauser and wildcat sections.

I am one of a few that have a CD of the Shooters Archives,in fact I sent a copy of them to #1 and a few others here. I can burn more copies of this CD easily if someone requests it.
More pressing to us now is HOW to collect the thirty-six THOUSAND posts on aimoo's server. They are of NO help.{AIMOO} and I would love to have a way to collect and have them for us in perpetuity.

All posts or written information found on my site gunloads.com or partner sites (cast boolits) etc. Are copyrighted by the ORIGINAL poster and they belong to them by the laws of copyright as soon as they are posted. If a quote is taken from another site or book, publication, etc. A notation of where that information was found should be presented within the post.
This is what I am doing. I can hold the copyright info, but I think if it's your information, your own knowledge.. It should be yours.. This is just to let everyone know how the copyright works on my sites.
I can Spider the aimoo site, but the amount of posts and files is WAY beyond my hosting capabilities. I can try and finish this and if it's possible it would have to be burned on a DVD disc because of all the info. Open to suggestions on how to index the aimoo site is MUCH appreciated!

Someone back during the shooters days offered to us a program that ran in Microsoft Access which allowed us to download all the info from shooters talk. I had it at one time but am not sure if I have it still. Does anyone have a copy? It could be possible to modify it to download the stuff at aimoo in the same manner as it worked for shooters.....
Does anyone remember who made the original program? I am sure with enough looking he can be found in shooters archives. Maybe if we can contact him, he could modfy the program to work at aimoo.
45Nut, I worked on the shooters archives last night and found that some of the files in the early series is missing. When properly set up as Cajun directed you should be able to click on a topic on the respective "index" page and it will lead to the post. The zipped version of particular files section I am missing is not very big. Is it possible if I identify which one you can e-mail it to me?

but I've been swamped lately.
Thanks to Wills for bringing this to my attention.
First off, it looks like there are enough copies of the LCLA around to ensure the info isn't really lost for good.
As to how it was done, I used a program whose name I've been trying to remember for days now, but haven't dredged it up, that basically sucked down the web content of any URL you fed into it. What I'd do was to get the URL for each thread and compose 500 of them at a time into an index page, then run that page through the program. The index page, message pages, and all the graphics and icons would be downloaded and stored locally. Lather, rinse, repeat for all the threads and/or boards I wanted, and that created the Archives. It did take a while to compose the index pages, but I had it pretty much automated, so it was just a matter of saving some HTML and hitting some buttons.
The name of that program must have leaked out somewhere, and I STILL don't have my computers set up, so I can't look it up. But, if you do a Google or Yahoo or Dogpile on "web sucker", you should come up with several.
PageSucker, WebReaper, and "Local Website Archive" came up for me on a Dogpile search (but the one I used wasn't any of them). Actually, searching for "download web pages" brought up several hits. Didn't look at the licensing requirements for them, though.
I see no reason why something similar couldn't be done with the Aimoo site. It would just take a bit of keyboard time.
As someone said, my archives have been offline since I left Florida, and though I am moved into my house, we don't have landline phone service yet (by choice), much less Internet, so I still don't know when they'll be back up. Because of this, and since I'm traveling so much right now, I don't think I'll be able to help with the Aimoo project for a while. Sorry :( Hopefully, once this first grey hull is sent to Texas, I'll be able to get some work done on the house and get some connectivity there. No telling when that will start, though.
Sorry I can't be of much direct help, but if anybody wants to try it, I can at least give advice.

If someone has a copy CD of the "LCLA" they would be willing to send to me, I could most likely be able to add it to the server so that anyone could be able to get the information. I havent found a good program to spider Aimoo yet either. But if you do have the LCLA Cd you could send me, just P.M. me.
