Got some cast gas checked bullets that weigh out at 157 grains. Reloader15 is the powder on hand. Anybody got any input on loads. I'm thinking about starting out at 31 grains which is the starting 170gr jacketed load.

Do you have any other powder in stock? Reloder 15 is probably not an optimal choice for the .30 WCF and 31 grains is alot for a cast boolit starting load. If this is all you have I would maybe try 27 grains to start and work it up from there.

Rl15 has been really good in my 30/30 shooting jacketed. Lee book shows starting load of 31.1 w/170gr and 32.8 w/150. Have used up to 33gr under 170 but have settled back to 31 as the lee scoop throws that amt. Only have hp 38 and lilgun in my magazine. ThinkI can get some IMR3031 though. I'd like to push these gc cast to about 2000fps.

Have been using 3031 for 30-30 for many years, with Lyman 311291 which is a 170 grain roundnose. You can start at 25 grains and work up to around 30 or 31 grains which is listed as max and should give you around 2100fps. I found that 27 grains grouped the best for me in my 94 rifle and carbine; sized.310 with a slight roll crimp; recoil is moderate. LLS

If Reloder 15 has worked well for you in the past then by all means try it. I've just always found that Hodgdon Varget and IMR 4895 work way better in my rifles, both Winchester and Marlin. Heard alot of good things about 3031 but never tried it, not a very common powder around here.

27 g RL 15 under 175 g 31141 works well in the 2 Marlins I load for. If you paper patch the bullet you can go on up to 30 g with good accuracy.

Is it possible to paper patch a standard boolit?

I get good results with 20 grs. of H4895 and 160 gr. G.C. bullets from a M336 in .30 WCF. They run about 1400 fps.

If you mean a standard shaped cast boolit yes it is. There is a section on this forum. "Paper patching and smokeless powder" also one using black powder. standard boolits and boolits designed for paper patches are both covered.

Keep in mind when swapping loads from other bullets that lead bullets always take less powder than jacketed of the same weight.

The minimum jacketed load is not a cast starting load!!!. Here is a rule some saint on here explained to me about reducing jacketed loads for cast.

Take the published max j load, subtract the j starting load. Now take that range and subtract it from the starting j load. That is a safe place to work up your cast loads.

You should never try this w H110 or other reduced load pressure producing powders!

This is a flawed approach that would work with a 30-30 but not so well with other cartridges. Try that with a .243 win or 7mm Rem Mag. and you will still be pushing your Boolits too fast. Try it with an 9mm Para and you will be wasting your time with too low a starting load, you might even get a boolit stuck in your barrel.
