The Marlin 1895 or the Winchester 1886?, personally, I think the 86 is because of the way it's built, I could be wrong.
Just looking for those in the know of both of these lever guns, thanks:mrgreen:

if the 1886 is a newly constructed one, I would say the 1886 is stronger. Garrett says the modern 1895 is good to 43,000 psi, and the modern 1886 is good to 50,000psi:

That is a good read, if anyone would know about cast bullet shooting, it's Randy Garrett.
I tend to believe him about the action strengths, but, I prefer to keep the pressures to the Lyman cast reloading book, my loads are right at 28,300 psi.
These loads are easy to shoot and will knock the snot out of anything I hunt around this side of the globe.

Having owned both old sqaure bolt Marlin 1895's and the New Model 1895 that uses the 336 action I gotta say I like the old square bolt Marlin 1895's better then the ones they've made since 1972 !

I also like the old Marlin 1895's quite a bit more then the old Winchester 1886's .

I prefer the Marlin for stout loads.

Have owned both (Browning 1886 Carbine/Marlin 1895, 73' dated) and prefer the Winchester for iron sights and Marlin if you want optics.

That's understood, but which has the stronger action?

Marlin is stronger then winchester. Do you ever see full bore ammo for winnies? They always say Marlin or Ruger only.

That's not supported by facts stating which is rated for the most pressure. It's an opinion based on personal preference. Research will show the newer Winchester 1886 is rated for higher pressure. There are a lot less Winchesters out there than Marlins due to price and how many were made.

Hard to tell. You'd have to do destructive tests on both the modern Miroku 86 and the Marlin 95. If anything, the 86 design looks a little stronger, IMO. But I'm not going to test the theory :)

Lyman data separates 3 categories (levels) of 45-70 loads: 1)Trapdoor, 2)Win 86 & Marlin 95, 3)Ruger Sngl Shots.

1886 is stronger as far as action but they're both stronger than need be. Also the 1886 will take evermore stout 500 gr. loads and cycle them through the action. The loads i used back then came from an old speer manual for 1885 browning single shot, marlin, and ruger single shot. I don't think those type loads will cycle through the marlin action as it's a bit short for it. Single load em tho. You probably wouldn't shoot the load i was using back then in either rifle. There were no pressure signs but i'm quite sure looking back i was on the ragged edge.
