I just know that there are many microbrew beer lovers on this board but I don't see a thread for us. How about people post some of their recent ales/beers that they have tried that are memorable and also some of the stinkers.
Maybe also some home recipes for us homebrewers also.

I'll Start: Bought a 4 pack of Hebrew's Bittersweet Lenny a few days ago. WOW! If you like complex red ales this one is for you. Superb.
I also had a bottle of Ommegangs Abby Ale. Some flavoring but not overpowering more like a touch on the back end. Another great Ale worth seeking out.

I have a few house beers I brew throughout the year, but this year was a bad one for me. Only 20 gallons total. In a normal year I will brew up about 200 gallons, 20 gallons at a time. What I did brew was a lemon wine, or hard lemon-aid if you want to call it that. Skeeter pee they call the stuff. Real good, and everybody loves it. Had some bummed guests at thanksgiving this year because it was all gone.

I've posted some Homebrew recipes in the "recipe" section.

I suspect the best place to discuss commercial beer is in the pit "off topic"
I don't buy beer.

I think part of the reason is that those of us who love beer already belong to a beer forum.
My favorite half and half is Buffalo Bills orange blossom cream ale with Guinness on top. Tastes like one of those candies with dark chocolate over an orange jelly center. The ale on its own is nothing special.

Hard to beat a tall cold pint of Oberon. I also really like Bells Amber Ale but Oberon is the best.

In the early days here, it was required that you state your beer preference when you joined the board.

I used to make beer, wine, and mmmm spirits. My old Chesapeake would be my beer tester. If she would drink it, we kept that batch for our self. If she wouldn't touch it, it went to my friends. I don't know what the difference was, but she knew quality in beer. I suspect she was W.C. Fields re-incarnated.

I used to make beer. It wasn't very good but it sure was cheap. Blue Ribbon Hops flavored Malt extract, water, bread yeast and cane sugar allowed to ferment in a new plastic trash can. when worked out add a little sugar to the bottles, decant and cap then a second ferment in the bottle to add the fizz. The most expensive ingredient was the bottle cap. It did pack a wallop!

Just bottled 5gal. christmas ale(for others) and 5gal. chocolate coffee stout last night. When it comes to store beer, I keep going back to great lakes dortmunder gold and great lakes edmund fitzgerald. Sometimes I'll buy sierra neavada celebration ale.

Used to drink my share & then some before the craft/microbrewery thing really took off. Sadly, I developed an allergy for beer in 1988 and they had to lay off an entire shift at the Miller brewery in Ft Worth. ;-) I feel badly about that so to make up for it I'm doing my best to support the wineries in CA, Argentina, Australia and occasionally even Texas. I love a good single malt as well but a good bottle lasts me a long time!

Probably the same recipe I used in the 70's. This stuff could be substituted for any application that required kerosene.

I just started my 1st batch of beer a few days ago, a Chocolate Stout partial extract. Beer making is a lot of work compared to making wine.

I did help out my cousin in the early 80's with his homebrew Blue Ribbon batches. The results pretty much turned me off homebrew. Especially after a batch blew up in the barn and Mom made me clean the mess up. I guess he bottled too early and/or used too much priming sugar.

I spent this summer winemaking though. The results, so far, have been very good.

2 gallons of Blackberry - terrible at 1st, after 4 months bulk aging it's wonderful, bottled yesterday

2 gallons of Welch's White Grape-Peach - lady's seem to love it, back-sweetened w/more concentrate

1 gallon of Welch's Concord (for a starter for a batch of Skeeter Pee, actually not too bad)

5 gallons of Skeeter Pee (too tart, heartburn, even after backsweetening)

5 gallons of Fig (smelled awful fermenting, sitting in secondary 3 months now, might just be good)

10 gallons (3 batches) of EdWort's Apfelwein (Awesome stuff back-sweetened w/concentrate)

4 gallons of Scuppernong (weak taste, weak flavored grapes from too much rain, I'll blend this with some stronger Muscadine next year)

6 gallons of Dragon Blood (jury is out, put 5 gallons in primary, had a bunch left over w/lees that I put in a glass gallon secondary. The 5 gallons seems ok, the 1 gallon is "off" from the lees.)

Nosir, the good stuff goes down real smooth. I grew up in Kentucky, I've had just a sip or two.

Having said that I rarely touch hard stuff anymore. I do enjoy a good beer. I can't handle flavored ones though. After spending 3 1/2 years in Germany while in the Army a nice hoppy lager or crisp pills is my preference. Still like a good Weisen when I can find one too.

Hey!!!! I resemble that remark!! At least I did years ago when I brewed my own.

I brewed at home for over 20 years before I decided I did not want to drink beer every day any more. It was a good decision, for me. I am not a teetotaler by any means.

At the same time I can say that I have not had many commercial or micro beers that can touch a really good home made once you get good at it. I highly encourage you to go out there and try brewing your own if you have not yet tried it.

When we wanted cheap beer when I was younger we wet out to Schells Brewery in New Ulm, MN and bought cases of shorts. Bottles that weren't full so rejected off the line. Instead of dumping them brewery sold them cheap. They were never ran through the pasteurizer so it also tasted better than the store bought bottle Schells (AKA deer piss)

I just came back from two weeks in Belgium and France. The fruit and candy flavored beers leave me cold. I will take Troll in Belgium or 1664 in France. I would rather have Pabst than the Jupiler they serve in all the pubs. Belgian Stella is OK and the only beer that I saw served on tap in Northern France.

I found a version of Grolsh (which I've always liked) and made a couple batches this fall.
WOW This is my new favorite brew!!!! Has a grain flavor that I really like.

I'll keep making different kinds because I can, but its going to be tough to beat this one in my taste buds. I usually have some local microbrew in my kegerator, but I think I'll start kegging this one for my tap.

Some of the new partial mash beer kits are not bad at all. Northern Brewer has a bunch of them. Good learning tool to move onto all grain brewing too. Did all grain for 10 years after about 5 doing the beer kits. Wish my back could handle a batch now and then, I like a cold beer during the holidays.

As jonp suggested Ommegang makes an excellent product. (I especially like their White/Witte beer.) However, if you like Belgian style beers and ales, try Tripel, Duvel, any of the lambics, and Rodenbach (ale). We are fortunate as there's a microbrewery within walking (crawling?) distance from my house, which offers a very nice selection of beers: http://www.keeganales.com/ On Thurs. afternoons, between 4 - 8PM, they host "Mason Jar Night," which consists of a 16 - 20 oz. pour of the beer of your choice in a Mason jar, at a reduced price. (One of the bartenders is especially generous if you're on her good side!)

Ok, I'll chime in here as requested. Jonp, you did fine picking Our Town as a place for this thread, although the Humor and Off Topic section may have been a better place but that is debatable.

For those of you claiming there is no room here for threads like this all I can say is: "Lighten up". If you see a topic you don't like ignore it, problem solved. By commenting negatively all you add is angst and dissension. I like to believe our community here is better than that.

Topics in the pit are to be ignored if they offend me. This I can live with . Why do I have to ignore topics in "Our Town"? In the past I belonged to a duck club where members drank to excess. I would take my young sons hunting and made a point of not drinking so they could see someone have fun without getting drunk. A liitle bit of that I think applies here. If you are a drunk got to a beer forum or the pit, this is supposed to be a family section. I would suggest that the moderators need to reexamine where this thread is posted.

Same here. I actually hated beer for a long time. I was one of the rare ones and didn't drink until I turned twenty one. And when I did it was nothing but screwdrivers. At some point I found Newcastle and will drink that over any other beer. I won't turn down a Chimay or Duvel either.

I came to a realization a few years back. A lot, not all, of beer connoisseurs are the same as winos. Meaning they're snobs when it comes to beers. Personally I hate drinking a beer and it tastes like I bit into a flower. Pretty much any commercial is fine by me. As long ad it's not an IPA or other hoppy brew. I was all about Lionshead when it was $9 a case. And I still buy PBR in returnables for $14 a case :)

Let's see. Religious? Nope. Politics? Nope. Humor? Nope. Started off as a serious inquiry.
Off topic? Sure.
So are a lot of things in Our Town.
All in all, some members are more concerned about where a topic gets posted than the staff is. If they may or may not be in the "correct" place, just means some in a more targeted audience may not see them.
All in all, it may have been better in the cooking section, as a lot of the guys here are brewers.

hmmm...you are right about many being homebrewers. I was trying to start one about microbrews people may have bought and liked as homebrewing is kinda a different subject specific to itself. I will change the title to reflect that this is not a homebrew thread.

I see what you mean though as some of the recipes can get kinda involved and homebrewers can be as picky and obsessed as, i don't know, casters?

I love to imbibe a nice brew or two. Many a gent has gotten some good work from me in trade for a 12 pack which they enjoyed too, whilst I took care of their problem.
In the south, beer is the barter of choice, often preferred to the almighty dollar.

Now, I can rarely afford to spend money on alcoholic beverages, so I usually make sure to get something I know I'm going to enjoy, which until this year has been Budweiser.
However, a few months ago, I really wished I had some beer to enjoy over the weekend, so I pulled into the store and had a look at the prices. I saw that Busch was a little cheaper than my usual Budweiser, so I bought a 12 pack, figuring that I would regret it.
Turns out I absolutely loved the flavor of that beer!!! Heck, I even like it warm.

There's always cultural friction when the subject of alcohol is brought up. In some parts of the country, if you're drinking, then you are either drunk or working on it. In the south, we sip brew whilst we solve the worlds problems and wonder why those yanks are so irate all the time. LOL!

It looks like I'm late to the party! On the rare occasion that I drink a beer, it's going to be one of two brands here lately. Rolling Rock which I prefer in warm weather, and Guinness extra stout in cold weather. No particular rhyme or reason for that, it just is what it is.

By the way, having a beer (or 2) no more makes a person a drunk than sitting in a garage makes a person a car.

I've been trying some new brews lately, mostly Stouts. I like how my son puts it, a stout is like having a sandwich and a beer at the same time!

I dont remember the name because I already peeled the label off and added the bottle to my brew stuff, but it started with a P and it came from back east somewhere.

I'm thinking about brewing a nut brown ale this coming weekend if I get the ingredients.
I'm going to do an oatmeal stout next month. I've never tried one but heard they are really good.

I started a thread not a forum. If you want a thread for non-drinkers or former alcoholics start one.

Whats with the negativity guys? This is a light hearted thread about a favorite microbrew people may have run across. It's not about doing keg stands or dizzy izzy

BTW: Congrats on 30yrs sober

I certainly don't think that everybody that drinks beer is a drunk. I just wanted to add some balance to this "thread

To me, ANY beer or ale tastes awful. BUT I drank an awful lot of it before I quit!:drinks: As far as that goes, I also detest the flavor of whiskey, or anything other than gin or vodka. Never tried tequila. Got so sick on $1.50/gallon wine once, I never drank any after that. In moderation, there's nothing wrong with drinking every day. It's when you just have to get drunk every Friday night, to do the stress relief thing, is when the problem starts.

Yesterday afternoon was thanksgiving day at my step family. My stepson Ron had a big bandaid on his forehead, and a couple contusions on his temple. It seems he got falling down drunk,,--then fell on his face on the sidewalk. The bandaid covered a pretty bad cut in his skin. He refused the paramedics treatment, and has refused to go to the E-room for treatment. My son Matt is a paramedic, said he should get stitches or he would have a bad scar, again Ronny refuses!

All I said to him is; I haven't had a hangover for 30 years! He just shook his head and walked away. No sympathy from me. My prayer is he hits bottom, quits drinking, BEFORE he kills himself or somebody else.

There's "Pinkus" from Germany, good stuff.
It's Certified Organic if that's important.
If it was American I can't keep track of all the breweries.

Im like you. Whiskey tequila etc i dont like and any wine other than
Boonesfarn tastes like rubbing alcohol. I will drink a little blackberry brandy and jagermeister though once in awhkle. Anyone that needs to drink or gets falling down drunk on a regular basis needs some help.
I have not had a hangover in years. I cant afford to drinking $10 bottles of micro brew and with a cdl any dui will end my career which is why ive either stayed home or had a designated driver over the last 25yrs.
This is a thread about fine beer much like fine wine not a lets let hammered thing.

A fine wine, huh? I'd take a beer any day over most wine, especially a good homebrew, but I've got 10 gallons of chokecherry/concord grape wine settling out. Its pretty durn good, but it is DRY. I'm going to sweeten it up some before bottling.
My apple wine didnt turn out so I dumped it. I think I'm going to make some rhubarb wine and some peach wine shortly though. Got some frozen in the freezer and I need the freezer room for an elk. Might as well store it in bottles or my belly, eh?:drinks:

I seem to get wasted about once a year. I go to the saloon pretty much every single night and have a couple drinks. I get as rowdy and mouthy and obnoctious as I want. I have my own saloon complete with a jukebox, pool table, beer tap, stocked bar and an indoor grill in my man-cave. If its cold out or I'm just making beer I can light the old wood cookstove and we can sit around it and tell all sorts of lies. It seems like theres always somebody stopping the house by to see what I'm up to.:2 drunk buddies: Its messy because of hunting season right now, but I'll post pictures someday.

I just wanted to brag about that. I dont get drunk every night and rarely even have enough to get a headache in the morning. BUT, that said I'm sure I drink more than most just because of the fact that theres always somebody stopping by here. I dont want to be rude, so we have 2 or 3 drinks and BS awhile.

I made one batch of beer, turned out so bad my youngest baned me from making more. I just drink what he makes now.

This fella is a genius. This strategy also works for clothes and dish washing.

Finally found a new favorite. Great Lakes Brewing Co.'s Christmas Ale. Bit strong on the ethanol (7.5%) but very nice favor and balance.
