Remington 700 PSS .308 detachable magazine. 1/12 Twist. Bore slugs around .3075 or .308 (no micrometer). I'm looking for a good medium-heavy GC boolit 170ish maybe. Here is the catch. The magazine limits my oal, thus using j-words, I have a fair amount of space between the boolit and the lands. Never fired cast in this rifle. I'm thinking that maybe a cast boolit with a bit of a meplat might produce a round that would touch the lands and still feed from the magazine. I'll probably be limited to a Lee 2 cavity due to holiday finances. Only 30 cal mold I own now is the Lee 312-155. So, two questions:

1. Should the meplat idea work?
2. What budget mold would you recommend?

Thanks.

Of the several Remington 308's I own they all have long throats, and they all measure within a few thousandths of each other. I have one 30-06 which has about the same long throat as well. I've had pretty good luck accuracy wise with the Lee 30-180 bullet at velocities in the mid teens seated at 2.710" oal which will fit in your magazine. I've not tried to push this bullet any faster. If the throat in your rifle is similar to mine, which I suspect it is, you will still be about .100" from touching the lands. If I touch the lands with this bullet I have less than .200" bullet in the case.
Recently I had Tom at Accurate molds make a mold for me which when the base of the bullet is seated to the base of the case neck it fills the long throats and results in an OAL of 2.660" which will easily fit in your magazine. This bullet is #31-180R in his catalog. The front driving band is long when compared to other 30 cal bullets. I did cast some of these bullets about a week ago and have them ready to go but waiting for them to "season" a bit and for the opportunity to get out and try some. I have high expectations for this bullet in my factory chambered Remington 308's and 30-06. You might want to take a look at his catalog to get and idea of what it takes to fill the throats of the Remington factory chambers, at least several of mine.
Good Luck,
Rick

PS after using the Lee 309-180R which my mold drops with a .300" nose in my alloy I decided to try the 312-185-1R hoping to get a nose of .301" or .302". The larger 312-185 mold actually drops a bullet with a nose of about .297" or .298" so no help there.

Thanks. Those Accurate molds look very nice. I may have to save my nickels for a set of those. I wonder how the Lee C309-170-F would work.

The Lee c309-170-F is exactly the same bullet as their 309-180 only with the flat point. I would think it would work pretty well. I also would hope it would cast with a nose of .300" or a little larger. The 170F would probably make a better hunting bullet because of the flat nose.
