Need some assistance as my memory is drawing a blank and the info I thought I had, well I cannot find it, may have been on another harddrive, or I have simply lost my mind.

Once upon a time I am sure I had info on a .40 or .41 caliber wildcat based on a 30/06 case simply cut off to 1.8 or 2.0 inches, searching has been fruitless and I cannot remember the name of the cartridge. I believe it headspaced off the casemouth if memory serves.

can anyone help point me in the right direction?????

thanks,
Mike

Are you sure it was .40? Sound more like a "miss-remembering" of the 458x2" American
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.458%C3%972-inch_American
Which, to be sure, is NOT based on the 30-06 case.

While the 458American is very cool, that is not what I was thinking about. I remember that the inventor actually dreamed it up because he had a bunch of neck split 06/270 brass....so I am pretty sure I got that part right. I think he reloaded it with either 401 powermag or 414 supermag dies.....hell maybe I dreamed it, cause I have been searching for 2 hours and have gotten bupkiss.

IF a pistol round ? possibly 40 or 41 auto mag !
i belive the 357 & 44 auto mag was based on a cut down 30/06 or 308 case.

I belive the 458x2 american was based in a belted magnum case ?

Sounds a little like the .340 Howell but I don't believe the cases for that round are shortened.

.41-08 Davis and .411 Davis Hawg are both ".41's" on a .308 case so same basic result as you are talking about.

I just read some on the rounds chuckbuster put up but I don't remember hearing about any on a 40cal except the 400-06 (400 Whelen). Can't recall any that were cut down for a pistol round.

I think my fellow Michigander nailed it......I remembered the length slightly off...........It is kind of a 44 super(duper)automag that does not require inside neck reaming because of the smaller boolit diamter...........thanks for helping me with some "spitballing" fellas. Much appreciated and Happy Thanksgiving

In his book "Designing and Forming Custom Cartridges" Ken Howell shows the .41-08 Davis with a fairly straight body, small shoulder and a neck .425 long, case length 2.01" Sort of a short .400 Whelen. The .411 Davis Hawg is drawn as a cylindrical case, no neck, with same length, and more taper.
