View Full Version : The most fun gun you shoot.

I bought a Masterpiece arms 9mm with fake can. It was a purchase just "in case"

I got to playing with it and found that I can load 1.3 gr of Win 231 under the Lee 125 RNFP boolit and it cycles fine. It is a hoot to shoot and 'bump fire'.

That load wont cycle my other 9mm's so I color the primers to keep them separate.

Surprisingly accurate if aimed and have no problems hitting a B-27 @ 80 yrds

Sounds pretty awesome. How much did that pistol cost?

For me, my favorite gun to shoot might just be a Marlin 795. It's a ton of fun trying to hit targets at ranges past 100 yards, since you have to hold over so much.

I won't own a gun I don't enjoy shooting but just for "fun" it's gotta be my 1894 Marlin. A half-dozen liter plastic bottles, a few clay pigeons, and coffee can of reloads and I'm fixed for a couple hours of old-fashioned plinkin'.

For me it is the T/C Contender. 22lr, 22Hornet, 223Rem, 357Mag, 44Mag, 30-30, 7X30 Waters. All of my barrels shoot cast well, and the versatility and accuracy is unmatched (for me anyway). From silhouette shooting to prairie dogs at over 200yds. Deer, elk, and everything in between. I have had more fun with this than any other.

LMT AR-10. Spent a fortune, but absolutey love that gun! I affectionately call it "The Pig" It just eats up 30 cal ammo and the thing weighs a ton.

1894C, nothing like a mag dump of 170 grain bullets hitting steel at 150 yards. I enjoy shooting all of my firearms. But chasing brass from the autos is tiring. The 1894C and S&W 586 always go to the range w/ me. My carry gun is a Walther PPS so that's a joy to shoot as well.

These days, it's my Great Grand Dad's Win. Model 94 32-40. Built in 1897, it's amazing how accurate it is with Accurate Molds 32-180C (my design) and IMR 4895. I've been looking for a vintage appearing Marble tang sight (windage adjusable) to wring every last bit of accuracy out of it.

Fun Gun?
FR7 in 7.62 x 51 whatever with 32 cal pistol boolits sized to 311, small smount of powder, any primer. Great plinking to 100 yds.
Small action Martini in 38/357 and shooting sub-sonic 38 special thru it. All you hear is "Chuff" and the plate moves at 100 yds.
Small action Martini in 22 mag with a loong barrel and a 20 power Lyman super target spot on it. Grass Hoppers and bumble bees at 100 (sometimes), and I fear that I'll never find cheap ammo for it anymore.

Normally, I love my revolvers, but since it's arrival, my M1 Garand is the most fun to shoot. I've had it out a few times shooting and easily go through 200 rounds per session, most HXP surplus but some handloads too. So far, more fun than my leverguns or my all time favorite rifle; a 10-22.

But I've got a Savage No. 4 Mk I* in the works that is pretty promising...

Fun to me is hitting the target, so my funnest gun is my Day 30X (22 on a 45 frame). The first time I shot it (in competition) I shot a 298 match course (Clover Range @ Ft Sam)- the next time (a few days later) I set a new USAF record on one stage of the 22 Match at the All-AF matches - that still stands! (Because they don't shoot that particular match anymore...)

The only gun I shoot 'for fun' is my 45/90 Sharps.
You can load a batch of ammo, doing everything perfectly, and take it out and shoot groups smaller than two MOA.
Take the same loads out three days later, and you can't get a group smaller than a paper plate.

So, the 'challenge' remains, no matter how good your load and technique may be. In my book, that's "fun".

My other guns each have their (smokeless) loads 'perfected' and each has a specific purpose. So, they are ready to go at all times, and don't spend much time being 'plinked with'.

Yesterday, the Sharps did this well at three hundred yards ...

Uberti 1873 clone with .38 Spl reloads. It has a Marlbes tang sight and is not only fun to shoot but cheaper than current .22's. It will empty 10 shots in less than 6 seconds. Fun plinker and it can be loaded with .357's for more serious work.

Close second is a Marlin Cowboy in 1894 in .38.

It is hard not to love a .30/30 M94

Yep, I love lever actions. I have over a dozen of them. Not saying the other guns are not fun - but it is different kind of fun.

For just walking out on my deck and shooting targets/squirrels/groundgogs and certain birds. I absolutely love my Ruger .22 Mark I Bull Barrel target pistol with Ultra Dot 4 scope. This pistol was taken apart cleaned up, reasembled and installed the scope by 44Man. It is the best shooting .22 pistol I have ever shot.

I also really like my Ruger44 Mag, I guess one could say I really like all my guns, thats probably why I have only sold a few of them.
However I did have a custom old craig I lent to a friend 20 years ago, LOL!

A 4" skinny barrel model 10 S&W. Cheap to shoot, moderate recoil and noise, accurate enough to scare soda bottles at 50 yards. Got a lot of other guns that cost more and do more but none are more fun for a stress free couple of range hours.

When many other guns were nigh on impossible to obtain, we were able to get about a dozen of these in the store earlier in the year.

At one point, some woman, who clearly was not entirely comfortable around all the guns and animal mounts (Seattleite), saw one of these I was showing to a few customers. She looked at it in disgust and said, "WHAT is THAT for?". Almost in unison, a few of us and the customer all replied "That's for fun!" ha ha!

And so it is, a load of fun!

When I want pure, no-work FUN I find my hand reaching for the .45 Colt NEF Classic Carbine and a can of pistol ammo. The red dot sight looks stupid on it but takes all the eye stress and thinking out of aiming, which was my point in putting it on there. Plus it's FAST.

Price of ammo and availability has tempered my desire to just burn ammo. I remember long ago of buying ($5 plus tax )a brick of .22RF and shooting it up in one day. that was fun. my buddy had also bought a brick, too. When we left, the ground was covered with empty shells. So, I would have to say my .22rf bolt gun is my fun gun.

Speaking of crowdpleasers my 1858 Remmy clone has never failed to put a silly grin on my face and attract quite a bit of attention. SAA's firing Holy Black are a close second. I have a Handi Rifle in .357 MAX. I really enjoy this on several levels. Loaded to the firewall with 180 gr. jacketed bullets, it is stepping on the ballistics of a .358 Win. The muzzle blast from the 16.5 inch barrel also blows away chronys set up on adjacent shooting benches at the range. Loaded with 170 gr. cast bullets at reasonable velocities, it is an awesome deer gun.

Loaded with my Lee 158 RNFPs over 5 grs. of 231, it is cheaper to shoot than a .22 RF. I am using this gun to teach grandchildren to handle rifles because it is cheap and has the safest action you can come up with.

AR-180 22 with 250rnd drum mag on top. Was at a MG shoot near Kearny Ne. in the late 90's where they (Class III) people would let you shoot the guns for a little more then the price of ammo I miss those days. It took awhile to load that drum up but it was a lot of fun. The on that hurt the most was a HK 51 with a meat cleaver stock on it.

If it goes bang without the heavy recoil I love it.

Like most of us I enjoy anything that goes bang. At one time or another I have pretty well shot everything but I do have a couple left on the bucket list. I still need to get a revolver bigger than a 454 and I still haven't owned a 45-70. And maybe a 32 TC Cherokee would be nice also.

I'm a group shooter guy & I get the most fun out of rifles that shoot 2" 5 shoot groups or less at 500yds. I enjoy that even better than at 1000. (of course I can't shoot 2" at 1000 more like 5 x 2") Of them all my favorites are Rem700 in .308, Rem700 6.5-284 F class, & 6.5-06 Rem700 hunting rifle. All custom made on the Rem action. I do have a new light 1000yd gun (17lb or less) in 300 Win that may take over if it shoots 4" at 1k like I think it will do.

My next favorite guns are...all the rest.

OK - answered the worst first - now the most fun.

Used to be the Milsurps. Nowadays (older and rebuilt shoulders) its the lever Marlins/Savage 99s, and the 44 SPC and 45 Colt Flattop Blackhawks with my cast bullets. The two revolvers are probably the hands down most fun!

They're all fun and when they stop being fun they get sold.

That said, and after a bit of rumination, I'd say a Remington no.4 rolling block. It was my late fathers rifle as a boy and every time I cycle the action I'm brought back to some of my earliest and best memories as a child. That's where my fascination with firearms began, and it shoots much better than it's peppered bore and less than steller sights should.

Which reminds me, I haven't shot it in far to long and just might have to dig it out of the safe this weekend.

Come on now Felix. Not every gun or person has to shoot like that for it to be fun!! One of my most fun guns is my S&W model 28. It'll print 3 inches (ish) at 25 yards and is a hoot!!!

I also enjoy guns that shoot far accurately, however lugging all the **** out, setting up on a bench, driving targets (paper/steel) down range, throwing out flags, filling out notebooks, waiting for the planets to align, etc can be a pain some times...and boring.

It can even be a pain to drive your steel out and ping steel at long distances.

It's good to be able to pull up, walk your target out, walk back, and be shooting within 5 minutes.

For me it is a revolver that came in a all or none group buy that I made about 10 years ago. A S&W 48 6 in bbl, 22 Mag. It was one of 4 or so handguns, that I said I'd resell as soon as I could, to recoup the cost of the entire purchase. I went to the range and threw it in my range bag, because I'd never shot a 22 Mag thru a handgun and wanted to do so, before selling it off. Well now 10 or so years later, it's still here and joins me in every range trip for a box of 50, during every trip. Just a bit different than a "regular" 22 and an unbelievable single action trigger, from the early 70's era S&W, just a plain fun gun to shoot - Cheers Bill in MA

Years back I built a Polish AK with underfolding stock. When I finally got the bugs worked out and got her running right, it turns out to be a real hoot. You have to be a bit careful, because the steel stock can be a little rough on your teeth. I built it as a SHTF/bugout firearm, figuring that with good ammo the 7.62x39 would make an acceptable deer round (the are right around a .30-30). But even with the cheapo spam-can foreign stuff it does pretty well.

Not sure what your saying. Shooting 500 is not hard with good guns & better scopes. If you know your bullet & load you know before you even shoot what your dope is for elevation. What gets you is wind & estimating.

Shooting "groups" is not hard cause your just gestimating the wind & it doesn't matter where they hit 10 ring or paper, just the group size.

At 500 even the wind is not that bad. If you know what it is where you are & the grass etc is blowing basically the same figure your clicks l/r & you should be in minute of kill.

Where you get killed is after 500. I have been shooting at the Quantico 1000yd range & had flags blowing 4 different ways between 500-1000.

Another one that will get you talking to yourself is at our tactical range out to 950, most of the targets from 5-900 are over a large pond & if you don't think the wind over water can't kick your az you need to try it.

Any good F class or 1000 yd gun plus custom target & hunting guns with good barrels & put together right & have Nightforce scopes or similar, should shoot less than a MOA at 500. Even stock Savage's in the F class & other hi end guns are shooting that & better & shooting nice groups at 1000.

There are also ARs & M14s shooting MOA. I have 2 that do. An AR shooting 80 gr Bergers with 25gr RL15 shoots 4-5" consistently & one of my M14s shoots 7-8" if I can see the sites good & the murphy gods are smiling.

Any ways, that floats my boat.

I am getting into CBs with rifles & all the above is meaningless for them. The post was about what was fun for the individual. I've spent a whole lot of time & money to get guns that do that, just because I like it.

Now I'm doing the same with CBs. A boy with his toys. I am even planning to use a couple of the guns we're talking about. Hoping I can get real nice results.

For me its definitely a vz58. Its the closest I can get to an AK, and ammo is dirt cheap!

"Phased plasma rifle in 40 watt range". Oh sorry wrong forum.

Seriously though, we're limited down under in what we can have, but my favorite would be my 4" GP100 with full house home made magnum loads.

I'll see your 40 watt phased plasma rifle and raise you a 45 Longslide with laser sighting

Plinging steel with last shot of Garand. Steel plinking on both ends of the range.

Right now fun is a Marlin Camp .45 carbine. Little thing is ringing steel at 150 yards. I had no idea .45acp could go that far.

My 33 year old Ruger Blackhawk with a red dot. That old gun and a couple hundred 150 grain swc with about 5 grains of unique can keep me entertained for a couple hours quite nicely. Plus it will generally out shoot my buddy's factory loads ever time. Second is about any other wheel gun.

Two extremes: My grandmother's revolver - an H&R 32 S&W (short). I load a piece of buckshot over 1.2gr Bullseye. Just plain fun to pop, pop, pop. The other is my S&W Model 3 in 45 S&W. Vastly accurate without great recoil with 250gr boolits. I could shoot these all day.

The John Browning / Winchester 1890/1906/62A pump action .22's - ESPECIALLY the ones that are S/L/LR capable.

At one time I reached a point with the competition rifle shooting where every trip to the range was either leather coats, cuff slings, and position shooting, or sandbags, chronographs and shooting for group. Got to where even my .22's were super-precise "cheap eating" practice versions of the match guns. I woke up one morning and realized that I had forgotten how to plink.

That was exactly why I bought my 1906 with almost no remaining finish and in need of stock replacement for the lofty sum of $75. Nice thing about it is that it doesn't HAVE peep and globe sights OR the capacity to mount a 20x scope. It isn't dependent on any particular level of recoil to function. It doesn't even care if the rounds in the magazine are all the same type. I can go to the range with that gun and not overthink anything - or even be prone to it. It's my ultimate "chill out" gun.

Going by roundcount downrange lately I would have to place my current favorite and favorite for the last 11 months or so as my AS ISSUED "Turked" Gew88 Commission Rifle. It was free and it is a hoot. It eats alot of stripper fed 15 grains UNIQUE "plinker" ammo for some reason. It constantly amazes me how accurate it is out to 300+ yards and did I mention it was basically FREE ( I had to buy a rear sight for it) from a buddy that bid one auction number too late and did not want it. A pocketfull of stripper clips is some very fun and cheap THERAPY.

Remembered a fun one from the past - Stoger Luger 22LR. Fun as $%^&* !!! That toggle action was FAST ! We could make a Ruger Mark 1 jam working the trigger too fast, never could the Stoger.

Accurate too !! One that's gone that I want back !!!!!!!!!

Sharps 1874, 34 inch tube, 50-140x3 1/4. Wm. Malcolm 6x Power Scope with 9" extension, Boolits launched are out of a Hoch Custom weighing 700 grains paper patched, this sits on top of 147 grains of GOEX ignited by Federal Match primers all stuffed into cases from Dixie Gun Works. No problems smacking a 55 gallon drum at 1,000 yards on a pipe line ROW ever time the thing goes BOOM! I own many rifles, but this one is by far my favorite. After buying a Barrett M82 A1, it sorta inspired me to start saving my pennies for this baby. Wasn't sure exactly what to expect, but, there it is. If you like huge, authoritative BOOMS!!!and shoulder slamming recoil, followed up by a massive cloud of white smoke, then waiting patiently for the SMACK of the hunk of lead onto target. you simply cannot go wrong here, folks

Therapy is the word I use.

Some days it is ok to "work" on things at the range. Some day I just go to shoot for fun. Those are the days when lots of ammo and the right gun needs to go. I find that guns that allow for reasonably quick, accurate shooting work best for me. High magazine capacity seems to help too.

I used to be an assistant instructor on the M3A1 when I was at Fort Knox. We used the same range that we used for the M1911A1, with pop-up targets out to 75 meters. Had they been real people, that would have been some hurting son-of-a-guns. It was a lot easier to hit at 75 meters with that than the 1911A1, and with trigger control, two-round pops were easy.

Of course, an M4 in 5.56 makes the M3A1 a dinosaur and it's even easier to hit with. Still, a .45, that's a big hole.

At work something like the 37mm and 40mm launchers with various specialty rounds(the rounds were what made it so fun). Here at home I love to shoot muzzleloaders. I really like to shoot garands too.
