Lots of uses for the big hats, keeps the sun off of your ears & bald head, helps to keep water out of your hearing aids, good for throwing on the other side of a tree to make a squirrel turn to your side. good to rest your gun on when you shoot off a rock,if Smokey gets after you you can throw it down for him to attack and it makes you look more hansom to the ladies.

Freezin's the reason.

I started out there then went to a bunch of schools where they tried to drown me, threw me out of perfectly good aircraft, heck they let me down by a rope a time or two which I thought was nice of them, I even got to carry a nifty raft up and down a beach for a while.
they fed us once or twice, and I got to chase a bunch of other fella's all around base every time we had to go somewhere.
wouldn't have been so bad but some jerk with a clip board kept showin up telling us all about how badly we sucked at everything.
later on they gave me a different rifle than the one I had before [looked the same but didn't rattle so much] and I had to shoot it a lot but I didn't have to pay for any of the bullets so it wasn't all that bad.

after all that fun they flew a bunch of us around the world showing us different places like jungles and deserts, but mostly we just run around bases everywhere and looked at maps of stuff.

Actually, I wear a 3xxx Stetson or a gortex slouch hat, just did not start doing it soon enough, have to make an annual trip to the dr. to have the pre cancerous lesions frozen.
Caps are not much help, ears and face are still over exposed, a real hat is needed in the more sunny places if you want to stay healthy.
Oh, yes, those Mexican charro sombreros are very hard, heavy and uncomfortable.

Ah, another member of the "Please freeze half my face off" club. A real joy, ain't it? I wear a cheap goofy looking cowboy hat in the summer that everyone from my kids to the mail man make fun of and an equally cheap and goofy looking fedora in spring and fall. This time of year we only get actual sunlight from about 11:15am- 12:32pm so my risk is drastically reduced.

I went with a friend to Sweetwater Texas a few years ago. His uncle passed away and he wanted to get a few things from the old farm, he asked if I wanted any of the old Stetsons in the closet.(There were 5-6 old beat up sweat-stained Stetsons.)I told him no, I wouldn't have any use for them.

Don't call him a cowboy, 'till you seen him ride...

Real cowboys around here drive F-350 Diesel duallies and wear ball caps. The smart ones also wear sunscreen. Felt hats are hot, heavy, don't fare well in the dust, and wilt into shapeless when they get wet. If you're familiar with Texas weather you can see what a joke they really are. They're also quite expensive when they blow off and get trampled, but look stupid with stampede strings so they're really only worn for show or dress. Straw hats are ok, keep the sun off, but most end up like a Toby Keith taco roll and have to be tied on.

If you ever see a Stetson around here that looks like George Strait's it's either being worn by him, a Yankee, or someone trying to sell you something.

Never heard the stampede strap term ,I always heard them called wind strings.

I have a late '50's GI DI's campaign hat that has the strap that is worn on the back of the head, and I can't imagine how that would hold a hat on your head during the wild horse backing (not bucking) that would take place during a stampede.

The hat would be blown off your head and gone in the first three jumps a cow pony would make when spurred into a breaking run !

Try it out. They need a good keeper on them, to keep them tight. Much more comfortable than under the chin, and it will keep a hat on your head on the east side of Montana antelope hunting. It gets a bit breezy over there.

Threads like this are one of the reasons I like this site so much. You all are hilarious! I saw that when you "Three Amigos" first did it, thought it was pretty clever.

The only hat I wear is a hard hat. I've seen some advertised that look like cowboy hats, but they're a little too ostentatious for me. One of my coworkers has one painted to look like a WWII helmet, complete with cards, letters, and M1 clip in the band. That would be a little more my style. I guess I wouldn't have to worry about visitors or contractors borrowing my hat if I had one a little different, though.

Lotsa big hats still in evidence around here-probably see a dozen men in cowboy hats in the store on an average day. I'm "all hat, no cattle" myself; today it's a smoke gray Milano with turquoise and sterling concho band-my grandmother always wanted us to dress nicely for holidays, and we've made it a tradition. Happy Thanksgiving!
