Anybody have any luck/experience with the Lee C324-175-R bullet in the M98 Mauser? Just inherited one of these old rifles with a questionable barrel and don't want to spend too much money until I get some feeling for how it"s going to shoot. Any pet loads with this bullet? Thanks for any help with this.

I have pretty good luck with the Lee bullet, Microlube, and about 30 grains of surplus 4895 in several 8 mm Mausers.

The 98 Muaser was manufactured by so many firms and state arsenals one would need to know exactly what kind of 98 are we talking about as there are significant internal dimensional differences that can come into play.

Hi Tom,

I have had great luck with that Lee boolit in my Turk Mauser over 17 gr. 2400. I have 2 different sized molds and was casting out of the .324" one and shooting them unsized & lubed with either Lee Liquid Alox or Lars Carnauba Red or my own batch of Felix Lube. I was shooting with open sights and my eyes and getting them all inside of 1-1/2 to 2" at 50 yds.

Of course you should slug the bore and size a little larger. The newer 2-cavity mold I bought last year drops out at .325" out of wheelweights and that works for my other 8mm which is a Yugo.

Newfoundler - The rifle is a 1917 year of production GEW 98. It was made in the Amberg plant. I haven't slugged the barrel yet but highly suspect from the history info gleaned on the internet it is going to show.323".

I think you will find, the members of this board, have high regard for that bullet in the 8X57. It does well in both of my Persian 98/29 Brno Mausers.

Well done! If you're going to have only one '98 why not make it a real one!

The Lee is indeed a good mold for these rifles. However I've found the Lyman 323470 to be even better due to the Gew 98s generous throat, narrow rounded lands and wide grooves. It's also a great round in the Gew 88 for the same reasons.

I primarily collect WW1 firearms in original condition and got into CBs to pamper my rifles at the range (when I buy cake I like to eat it). The Gew/Kar 98 are great fun to shoot especially with CB's as you can really get a sense of the quality of these guns' manufacture. No matter what bullet you choose I think you're really going to enjoy your Gew 98!

The Lee 175 has delivered great accuracy for me in an Obendorf 1933, a VZ 24, and a Yugo 48. I have come to bbelieve that it is the magc booit for any 98!

..............I have 3 Turks and they all like the Lee 175gr slug. The Turks are a M38 (with an Imperial receiver), M88/14/35, and a so called M38/46. The M38 and 88 have .323" grooves, .324" throats and so the Lee which drops about .325" gets sized to .324". The M38/46 has .323" grooves but will chamber the Lee sized to .325" so that's how that rifle gets it. All 3 shoot it very well and the M88 spectacularly so!

In fact that Turked M88 has shot everything exceedingly well I've cared to luanch through it. It weighs a frickin ton, and I sometimes visualize some 5'4" Turkish trooper having to drag that beast around on manuevers. Poor sod :-)

Gentlemen - Thank you all for your prompt replies and encouragement with this rifle. Lately I seem to be aquiring firearms fster than I can set up to cast and load for them but think I will push this one to the front of the list. It's my first military , was hoping to find a '03 or M1 but this is the way that the chips fell. Only had to give $100 for it and it looks like it has seen very little use if any. Not really sure of the bore condition though as it does'nt have that shiny mirror like appearance I'm so used to in my other guns. Will play with it and find out how it shoots. Report back will follow but probably a little ways down the road with weather and all.

Will the C324-175-R work in 32Win spl?

.32 special is .321" so I don't see why it wouldn't shoot but you had better not load more than 1 in the magazine as that nose is a little too pointed looks like to be resting against a primer. Can't see why it wouldn't work? If you size it down enough by first lubing it so as to not smear the lube grooves, you should be able to size it down.

use a flat point top punch and when you Jam it in the sizer maybe it'll give a nice enough flat point to use in the tubular magazine safely.... just a thought.
