Success! My first try at casting boolits (ingots were cast last weekend) and I have 54 beautiful results.

Thanks to all for the tips, tricks, and encouragement.

They will probably work but the corners of the bases should be square and sharp. If that is the
452374, you need to run the metal hotter and/or add some tin. Those will probably
shoot OK, but with square bases you will get better accuracy.

Not bad for a first start, but there is still room for improvement.

These were cast by ladle pour method from straight COWW. For the next batch I'm adding 40/60 solder (using the Excel calculator) to up the tin content. That should help with base fillout. There is always room for improvement.

This was more along the lines of a trial to see if I had learned anything and if this was something I wanted to continue.

The answers are yes and yes.

They look nice! I'm a n00b too, and I'm really enjoying it!

I agree about the corners...should work fine though.
Sometimes if I dont put a nice size puddle on top of the sprue I get rounded corners. BIG puddles are good

Try loosening the sprue plate until it will JUST swing free. Sometimes
this vents the base better and helps get square corners.

See, this is why I enjoy this site. Suggestions come flying in to help a new caster.

I did try to leave a generous puddle on the sprue plate. I'll try loosening it slightly for the next batch.

Thanks.

Still, a nice first effort and one of my favorite molds. Works great for .45 ACP or .45 Colt. Let us see more with the added tin.

Bring back memories of my 1st bad boys that went flying down the range long ago!

Have fun!

You're on your way to being a great caster.

Get everything clean and everything hot then get a rhythm going.

I picked up on the tip to loosen the sprue plate from this site - made all the difference.

Congrats! It feels good to be able to reload, but casting is the cream on top!

Looking good, suggestions should help fill-out and get rid of rounded base. Practice will bring confidence and inproved results. Still, those would shoot fine for me, I doubt I could tell much difference.

They look great for first cast. I just got to the bottom of my .40 cast boolit bin. The bottom of it were some of my first cast that I did about 4 years ago. Man have I came a long way in my casting. I learned so much since then thank to cast boolits. Keep casting its so much fun to cast your own. Especially when you shoot better than someone shooting a box of $50.00 bullets. Then they ask were you bought your boolits and you tell them you cast your own.
