Opening morning the smaller of the two came in at about 75 yards. He didn't like my blind and kept turning and looking at us. I finally decided he wasn't going to give me a broadside shot so I took a full frontal. Held right on the point of the brisket and squeezed one off. Load was 35 Whelen, 200 rcbs cast hollow point cast from 50/50 lubed with white label over 54 grains of H4350. Took the top of the pump, made a big hole in one lung, ranged back a pulped the liver. No exit. He spun ran about 50 yards and piled up. The big one came in the afternoon down the same trail. He didn't like the blind either. He looked and spooked twice and then ran about 75 yards. But, he had to stop and look one more time. He was broadside and the shot took the top completely off the heart. Complete pass through. He went about 75 yards and quit. Great day. And I think I have a new favorite deer rifle.

Ours here in Kansas doesn't start for a couple more weeks, but Fort Riley will have their three day segment right after Thanksgiving. I'm really looking forward to getting out with the 99.

Those are nice bucks, they do grow them big around here. Congratulations on a couple of really nice trophies. What rifle are you using?

I believe that is the best way to end an opening day
it would even be good to end up with nothing however I like your outcome

My Whelen has been put on hold recently however you have inspired me again

Wow! Nice bucks! Seems like you might want to brush in the blind a little better perhaps. Hopefully you can recover the bullet to see what it did. Congrats!!

nice!

I'm surprised a 200gr 35cal didn't get a pass through on the frontal shot... I guess the hollowpoint slowed it too much.

Nicely done, well told & good pics! Looks like a lot of work to get those two in the freezer. Recovered boolit and some rifle info would be quite interesting when you get the time.

Nice bucks. Great cartridge. Just be careful about posting that you shot two bucks during NE rifle season. There are no bonus antlered tags. You probably had permits for two individuals and each were shot by a different person. Not trying to troll either, just trying to watch out for a fellow caster.

This is incorrect. Any person may get 2 permits for antlered deer in Nebraska per year. Check out the regs here. http://www.sos.ne.gov/rules-and-regs/regsearch/Rules/Game_and_Parks_Commission/Title-163/Chapter-4.pdf

Top of page 4. Copy paste doesn't want to work for me right now. I know plenty of guys who buy both tags every year, not many that fill both however!!!

BTW great job!!!! Nice bucks.

I will admit to being somewhat spoiled. Very few years go by that I don't fill two buck tags. However, I only remember one other season where I filled both on opening day. That year our party of four put seven bucks on the ground. And if I recall correctly they were all eight points or better. I have a picture somewhere. I'll post it sometime although I will tell you all were killed with condom bullets. As for the rifle, it's just a model 700 classic with a Burris 3x9 nothing special. I will put up some pictures later this week along with some targets from load development. BTW thank you R5R for pointing me in the right direction.

Turns out that the guys that warned me about hollow points knew of what they spoke. Pictures speak louder than words.87986entry
87987exit. Extensive fragmentation on both deer. Fortunately not much meat loss.

Greetings and Congradulations !
That is exceptional. Two bucks same day, same place ! The Whelen cartridges are still what they always have been... Great ! Thank you for the fine photos and write up. I sure enjoy reading them.
Couple months ago JES had a caliber .375 Whelen for sale and I snaged it. Looking forward to shooting it next August. Maybe one day in ILLinois I will get to pop a corn cruncher with a center fire rifle. But I think some pigs will be first with the .375 as ILLinois seems to be the butt end Charlie with everything gun related.
