Took a nice doe at about 20 yards with my Marlin 45-70 SBL, open sights. I've been hunting with this gun for the last 2 years waiting to get my first cast boolit kill. I was almost as excited as my first deer ever. Shot it a little low but it was still a double lunger and it didn't go too far. Gave me an opportunity to show my daughter how to track a deer so it was ok to have to track it for a bit. She enjoyed being able to go out with me too so it was good fun.

Load was 405gr flat point dual alloy soft nose boolits cast using the BruceB method, 28gr of IMR 4198 with a .7gr tuft of dacron. They chrono right at 1320 FPS.

Congratulations. Had to feel good after a 2 year wait. Up close and personal too at 20 yards.

Nice job! Did it look like the bullet performed well? How was the blood trail and what bullet mold?

Nice job! Did it look like the bullet performed well? How was the blood trail and what bullet mold?

Boolit was an accurate 460-405M. Perfect fit for a Marlin chamber and it performed well. Zero blood shot meat and a nice big hole on either side of the rib cage. Blood trail was good, blood on both sides, she just kept doubling back on her tracks making tracking a bit difficult.

Good Job! CB's have been my first choice since my first kill, suspect they will be for you as well.

Closest shot I ever made on a deer was about 15 yards, used a 45-70. I think it was a 350 RD with a healthy load of 4895, went around 1800 fps. Yeah, it was overkill but I prefer to be prepared for the worst case scenario.

I'm glad to hear of your success, especially with your daughter. I hope to follow in your footsteps with my daughter. You're a good dad to include her in your fun. It's daddy-daughter time that she will remember always.

Congrats, Jailer. Not many people can get within 20 yards of a deer, much less with their children along, even from a blind. I learned very quickly that stalking close in the woods wasn't all that difficult, but that deer are finely tuned to the sounds of safeties being disengaged or a hammer being thumbed to full-cock. Always dampen the floppy trigger on a Marlin with your finger as you cock it, and a few wraps of rubber tape on the hammer spring can take out the "ring".

Thanks for all the kind words. It was great getting jr out there with me tracking and she loved it. Luckily we didn't have to track very far of for very long.

Your daughter is a fortunate girl.
My youngest daughter is in the works to making her dad a grandpa. Which makes him a fortunate dad.
It's all good. Time spent with your children is for sure the best time of your life.

There's lots to be said from always hunting from bowstands, especially with pistols.

Your investment in quality time in the woods with your kids will pay high dividends later.
