Can to much lube cause keyholing? I worked up 2 loads. 230 gr flat nose 5.7grns of unique, and 230gr round nose 5.7grns unique. The flat nose shot fime the round nose shot more accuratly even then the flat nose but seemed to be keyholing. Both rounds had the same powder and both rounds measured at.530, whoch is. 1000 over bore diamter. I domt know what could be causing one to keyhole and not the other.

Huh???

My round nose.load is keyholing on the target, hitting somewhat sideways.

Measure the diameter of the keyholing projectile, it sounds undersized, I've never heard of too much lube causing that. I might be mistaken.

No, what you see is a mismatch to twist rates/velocity.

I don't understand the measurements.

First off, what cartridge. What measures .530? And .1000 over bore diameter? A tenth of an inch over? You are shoving a 40 cal bullet down a 30 cal barrel?

We need more info. We need accurate info.

I'm sure he means .001 over (groove) diameter - hopefully. However, the .530 diameter has me stumped too. ?? Mike I think 44man nailed it anyhow.

What cartridge?

What gun?

Are you talking about the 45 ACP as in the other thread about Unique?

Sorrys guys its hard to type on this phome what i was trying to say is both boolits are. 001 over bore diameter. Both boolits are 5.7 grains of unique. The only difference is one is flat nose and one is round nose. The round nose obviously also has a longer oal. The flat nose shoots fime the round nose is keyholing. The gun is a springfield milspec. 45

You have two different boolits and one is on the edge of stability at this speed and the other one is over the edge of stability at this speed (velocity).

let me take a stab. your boolit measures .453" instead of .530" doesn't it?
at 45ACP velocities your problem is not the lube.

So you think the velocity is to low?

You might be pushing 650+/- fps with that load. I suggest, if Unique is the only powder you have, you up the charge to 6.5 gr.

Thanks Larry I will give this a try.
