I need a ramrod (not wood) for my 45 Kentucky rifle. Needs to be 33" or longer. Aluminum or fiberglass ok. Tried Track of the Wolf and no go. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

not wood, what material would you prefer? that could be had custom made in almost any material, But for traditional style, other than wood, brass is usually the norm. Heres a link for some http://www.rmcoxyoke.com/inc/sdetail/150

stronger than wood, but will add a bit of weight, which may or may not be wanted

here is a company that keeps the wood look, but has a steel core http://www.periodramrod.com/

or in aluminum http://spin-jag.com/giramrod_tapered.php

Well lets see, I have two that are a flexible epoxy type material that are solid, two aluminum tube ones, a solid brass one that weighs a ton. There is a seller at our local gun show that always has a bunch.

I bought a cleaning rod for my 45-70 Sharps from Shiloh. Beautifully made of steel with a swivel handle and jag of choice, and plenty long for your needs. Not much money for the quality I got, around $45 if I remember correctly.

.

Go to a HomeCheapo/Lowes, or a good hardware store, and buy an 48" long orange/yellow fiberglas driveway marker (used in the snowbelt to find a driveway or curb line).

I remove the reflective band(s), then epoxy & pin some RR ends to it after cutting to length with a fine-tooth hacksaw.

This is one, on my .36cal U/H

Dixie Gun Works used to carry fiberglass rods in brown fiberglass. I bought two to use as range rods and they were excellent. It's been awhile since I looked at their catalogs so they may or may not still carry them.

I would think the reflective bands would add some stylish "bling", that is if the orange wasn't enough.:kidding:

Where do you get the ends?

You can also take a piece of fired brass, like a .38 and mount it on there. I did this for my short starter. I ground off the rim and had a ball shaped cutter so I could concave the end to keep from deforming the RB. You won't have the cleaning jag then of coarse.

Some larger gunshows and some older gunshops may have odd, orphaned steel ramrods from muskets or other older military arms. A good steel ramrod doesn't have to be nearly full bore diameter to work well. Most 58 cal and larger muskets have much thinner ramrods. So the weight wouldn't be a lot extra and steel ramrods are excellent- the toughest of all the materials- that's why many of the military arms had them. Sometimes you can poke around and find one-piece used steel cleaning rods that would work equally well. Just some possibilities.

The fittings (jags, etc.) can be found most anywhere- LGS, some box stores that sell ML equip., Dixie, Possible Shop, Track of the Wolf, Midway, Midsouth, etc. etc. The threads on most US based rods will be 8-32, 10-32 or 12-28. European threads will vary with some being metric. Finding and fitting adaptors between threads is simple and the adaptors are also available from the same sources. It pays to standardize though so you can use files, drills, taps and dies to standardize around something like 10-32. FYI most common current cleaning accessories/rods are 8-32 for center fires with the smaller cals being smaller yet and the shotgun types being much larger. I've found advantage with the slightly larger size (stronger) 10-32 for muzzleloaders.

I'm thinking about making a collapsible loading rod to carry for hunting. Something that breaks down into 3 pieces to fit in a small pack with a bungie core like the poles for dome tents. Won't work to pull or clean but should be fine to push a load in.

That sounds like a plan, until a 2nd shot is quickly needed before the deer crawls over the hill, to where another hunter can tag it, while you're fiddling with assembling the RR, i.e.
