View Full Version : How would you lube this boolit?

From a NOE group buy, the boolit is a bore ride design, nosed diameter smaller than the base.
Is there a way to lube this in a lubri-sizer with out making a huge mess? I see lube squeezing out all over the nose.
Or am I stuck tumble lubing?

You are not going to like this - I would tumble it.

Lube only the back 2 grooves, maybe 3. Not a big deal

Looks just like my 6mm 87 gr Loverin style except for the flat nose. Tumbling is what I do.

I suppose there's always pan lube if you don't want to tumble

What lube sizer do you use?

Depending on how many of these you shoot could be a determining factor as well!

So if your going to shoot a hundrs or so a month here's what I'd do:

Figure out how many lube groove's need to be filled, saw suggestion for two or three, I figure your going to need a least three should you be pushing over 1800 FPS gas check or not.

Then I'd take measurements from boolit base, with gas check installed, to center of each lube groove you need filled.

Now contact Lathsmith with those numbers and type lube sizer you have, he can make a sizer die to suit you with the lube holes just where they need to be.

He has done this for me on several Star type sizer dies and as long as I measure correctly it has worked very well. If you have a Lyman or RCBS base first lube sizer I can't say for sure about any mes you may create, but 30 to 40 buks for a custom sizing die is cheap considering what you want done.

You are looking at .005 on a side with care I think you can size and lube in your sizer. Just watch how much pressure you apply. Once you figure out how much to advance the lube screw for each bullet it should go smooth.

I have the .288" version of that boolit, and use a Lyman 4500 to lube the first four grooves. No mess, no fuss.

I've two Loverin and two Loverin clone moulds and the 4500 easily lubes them all.

Looking at the drawing there are five lands on the boolit that can be sized at.286 this gives you four grooves that would lube with out a "mess" if you are using a rcbs or lyman sizer or some such.

Yeah, what he said. No need to make it any more complicated than it has to be.

I lube the SAECO #315 tapered bullet with a SAECO luber sizer just watch out how much pressure you use.

these are going to go out the tube at (providing I can make it work) at 2200+ fps. Copper enriched alloy :)
I have a Lyman 450 sizer & I already make my own dies. I guess I should have ask if 4 grooves is enough lube for that speed.
I use 45-45-10 for 90 % of my shooting with NO issues, not sure if it was up to that task, Recluse, in a PM, said it might be OK.
I always wonder if uneven coverage of the tumble lube is what gives me a flier once in a while. I actually prefer tumble lubing :)

Won't know until you try. I launched some GG boolits TL'd in LLA @ 2500 fps last weekend, no problems. I only use my Lyman for BP loads.

Or you could set the GC, run them through a Lee push thru, dip lube them to the desired level, then push them back through the Lee.

Exactly what I would do.

Set the lube sizer so that the bottom grooves lube and no lube squeezes out past the bullet, then you can tumble lube if you want more.

Jim - you know how I'd do it. PC all the way.

I got off my lazy butt and made a lube die to just lube the previously push through sized boolits.
I had a bunch of Blue Angel hard lube I've been using with good results, so, I lubed the bottom 4 grooves with that.
It was sufficient for the fps. I shot some at the range yesterday, Total of 15 shots all over 2400 fps, no leading and
perfect lube star on the crown :). Now to figure out a load, these where too fast, about a 2 foot group :(

I'd use a regular lubricator/sizer and experiment with the number of grooves I'd lubricate

I'd tumble. it's faster, and for my 7x57, it seems to work so far (at short distances)

I have a bunch of those boolits sized at .287 (I have the sizer and a bunch of the boolits came with it). I sized them and loobed em to the 4th ring. I am going to seat in 7mm Mauser to 2.800 COAL. No crimp, just eased the bell back. I just have to get my hands on a round nose seater cause the one that came with my Lyman dies only has a pointy bullet seat.

Oh... Does anyone know what the part number is for a round nose boolit seat for lyman 7mm Mauser dies is? I can't seem to get a reply from Lyman.

Pan lube it. You can do up a thousand in an hour or so not counting melt/cooling time,

Lube sizer will do the job with no problems I would try 3 or 4 grooves first as all grooves lubed will be too much, of was for me.

[QUOTE=rattletrap1970;2474644 I just have to get my hands on a round nose seater cause the one that came with my Lyman dies only has a pointy bullet seat.[/QUOTE]

you can squish a piece of tin foil in there and conform it to your boolit nose, or, hot glue.
Coat the boolit with paste wax so it the glue wont stick, add the glue and push the boolit into it before it gets hard :)

i only cast now for my 500 S & W rifle and 45-70's, they actally shoot better without sizing the cast bullet and tumble lubing with LLA. none of my loads exceed 1500 fps, so it works for me.
