I just got 41 pounds of 50/50 solder in 1/2 pound ingots for free! Now using wheel weights, how many pounds of good rifle bullet metal will that make????

Woot! Great score - How many pounds of bullet metal will it make? I'd estimate a gob - a gob is a technical term to describe things like the national debt :) great find!

You have 20.5 pounds of tin. So 2% with 100 pound batches will get you 1000 pounds of alloy.

Well, that should last me a week or two!

Tin is good.

Wow! So you have 20.5 pounds of tin there. Discarding any marginal hardness increase since you're thinking of rifle boolits, your hardness will come from the antimony. You need 3.2 ounces of tin per 10 pounds of alloy. If my math is right after a day in the sun and wind at an IPSC match, that's 102.5 batches worth of tin at 10 lb/batch so 1025 lb of boolits.

I can only estimate the requirement since we don't know what kind of rifle boolits and what velocity you want. For ordinary hardcast, you'll need 3 times as much antimony as tin for a 92/6/2 mix. Wheelweights are estimated to already be about 4% antimony.

For a .375 H&H or 45/70, a 50/50 mix of WW and pure lead with 2% tin may be exactly what you're looking for. For a .223 or .25-'06 you may want a harder alloy.

OK, I started this before some of the other responses came in. It was fun thinking about it, though.

Great score. Check out bumpo's stickied thread for what you should do with it. :drinks:

That much tin would cost you nearly $400 from rotometals, enjoy!
