A bunch of guys have been trying to get a long range shoot together for a couple of months now. Today we got it together and had a very good time.

I was shooting mainly the dreaded jacketed today out of the 308 win. We had steel targets set up at 100, 200, 300, 400, 600, 800 yds. I went straight to 400. Everything closer was going to be too easy. First round hit on the torso plate. Moved over to the 10" circle. First round hit. Too easy. Moved to the 600 torso. Held off torso target by 4 mil dots to see were I was at. Shot low. Dialed up to were I hit and the next round was a hit on the torso but a little low. Adjusted the scope for a center hit and it was right on. Next I went to the left to the 6" circle plate. First round hit. I shot 5 more times and hit it every shot.

Now out to 800 yds. Wind is starting to blow a little. I held off the torso plate by 4 mills again. I hit about 2 feet out in front of the plate. Adjusted the scope and ran 10 shots in a row with a hit every time. Now I want to challenge myself a little more. To the left is a 10" circle plate. I loaded the rifle with 5 rounds to see how good of a group I could do as no one had hit this plate yet. First round hit center. Cool! second round hits a little high and right. Third round hits almost on top of the first! Fourth round goes a little high of center. Now I'm looking at this plate and I have a 4-5" group going judging by looking through the scope. I get down and get ready to fire the fifth round. A split second before I fire I hear another rifle next to me go off as I pulled the trigger. His 300 win mag gets to the same plate before mine does. The plate swings up and I see my bullet hit the dirt behind were the plate would have been. The guy next to me goes " oh, you were shooting at that plate too?" Oh well.

Now it was time to shoot some lead! I cleaned the barrel real quick with solvent and dried it out. I did not adjust the scope at all from the 800 yd zero. I thought what the heck we will see were it hits at 400. First round hit on the torso plate! No way! The zero for the lead was the same at 400 as the jacketed at 800. Cool! I shot about 20 more at the different plates at 400. No one could believe I was shooting lead out of the rifle. I let one guy shoot a couple rounds and he just laughed.

I was shooting the LEE 200gr 2R with 21gr of 5744 seated to the crimp groove. This shoots a little under 1 in at 100 yds. we went out and re painted the steel and I was able to get about a 6" group and 400 with it. I tried to shoot it at 600, but it must not have been stable. I was not able to get on any of the plates. They were going wild in every direction. Total round count today was 150 jacked and 75 boolits. Some of the guys here today had some rifles that were over 7K$. Must be nice. The neatest was a new 6.5 Creedmoor on a Surgeon Action with a YHM silencer! My 22 rimfire made more noise than that did!

Here are some pics of the guys.

Looks like a lot of fun. I have never shot that long of a distance. Too many trees around here.

Iowafox, google this. lat: 41°50'58.09"N
long: 93° 6'50.03"W

It is near Baxter. One of the guys is a manufacturer of class 3 items. He had a few suppressors there. This was the first time I have been up close to one being shot. If we ever get these to be legal in IA I am getting 1,2 3.... of them. Unreal how quiet these were with a 6.5 Creedmoor and one on a 308 win. Very jealous!
