Model 1867, I really hate to brag, well it aint bragging if you have pictures is it. This 120+ year old rifle simply amazes me, went to the range to see which 45/70 I was going to use on my deer hunt took two a scoped Buffalo Clasic and the RB.
Do not get me wrong there isn't a thing wrong with the BC but here are the last 10 rounds from the RB. The rest of the target was getting the tang sight set at 100, but this is the end result.
The load was a LEE 500 g FPGC boolit cast out of WW and pure lead, 52g WC872 and a .5 cc 3031 the wind was 10/15mph from the rear blowing down range beautiful day.
I am happy with it.

Is the "a .5 cc 3031 " a over primer duplex ?

Beautiful acuracy, compliments and kudos.

................I'd suspect the velocity would be around 1300-1350 fps? Great shooting. So it's a sporter you're shooting? What barrel length?

It is a gun made in 1874 in great shape, did a cast of the chamber and sluged the barrel the chamber was a 45/70 and the barrel was .457 it has a generous throat (the reason I use that big chunk of lead 500g and looks like a log. I cast the chamber so I would know it wasn't one of the metric ones that might be dangerous with the 45/70. I only neck size the brass for neck tension, and use only cast boolits and very low pressure loads.
Yes the 3031 is over the primer and cleans up the WC872 a little, it will shoot it straight but leaves a lot of trash but with the 3031 it is nice and clean.
I also use Black Powder in it but it is a hassel to clean the gun and the brass so i don't do it often.

............If it's made in 1874 then that was only a year after the military adoped the 45-70. A true 1st generation :-)!

Does one have to be real carefull handling the ammo , ....duplexed such.....? Like, to keep the "booster" from mixin' with the main charge ?

Intruiged and curious, ....totally unfamiliar with WC872.

Very nice shooting, proving once again that with a little patience and prudent loading, an old Military Rolling Block is entirely capable of tickling a bee between its wings.

I am a fan of Reloader 7 if I'm working up a hunting load. I've found 3031 is a bit dirty, but the biggest drawback is that it tends it to be VERY postition sensitive. I don't want to be worrying about that in a hunting situation.

12gr. of Unique with a little pillow fluff holding it against the primer is my day in/day out "pleasant" shooting load with excellent accuracy. All bullets are cast of course and typically of WW origin. Beeswax and olive oil lube. You can shoot all day and still do a hundred pullups at sunset...

Again, very nice shooting!

...............The load must be a casefull so the booster charge can't mix. In my 45-70 initially I loaded from 1 to 5 grs of H4198 as the booster under full caseloads of WC872. I found that for me the 3.0grs of H4198 did what I wanted. It cleaned it all up and best of all was very accurate.

Check Castpics for velocity and load info. Velocities were pretty much like those for BP. If for some reason you wanted lower speeds, you'd reduce the WC872/860 and then have to use a solid filler like Super Sam or another Grex type stuff.

The WC872 is a surplus powder. Take a look here.

For those clarifying / iluminating on the WC872, ....I'm in your debt, ....and I mean that.

Looks to be worth checking out and studying hard.

We're talking 100% load densities, if I read Ya'll right?
