The wadcutter is a cylinder with a full profile meplat, a DEWC has two ends that are the same. The SWC has a nose and a larger meplat. A TC nad a smaller/narrower nose that has a smaller meplat.

A semi wadcutter has a full diamter flat cutting face, and a stepped down smaller dia nose that tapers to the meplat.

A truncated cone has no flat cutting face, rather the bullet tapers from the full diameter to the meplat and the taper is typically straight.

The difference is when shooting paper the semi wadcutter will typically cut a full dia hole in your target, the truncated cone will produce more of a torn edge on the target.

A wadcutter is a full dia flat faced bullet with a very short nose as previously shown. It will also cut a full dia hole in the target. One bid difference with the wadcutter is the majority of the bullet is seated entirely in the case of the cartridge so that the powder capacity is reduced. This is beneficial to get consistant ignition round to round when using reduced powder charges.

A truncated cone is a conical shaped nose with a the point cut off, truncated, leaving a flat. The cone goes from full body diameter to nose with no shoulder.
A wad cutter is essentially a pure cylinder with no nose.
A SWC is, essentially, a wad cutter with a truncated cone on top but it has a definite shoulder on top of the body portion.

They are very different in what they do well, what they are generally used for, and how they fly.

A wad cutter and the semi wad cutter depend on the shoulder to align in the cone and bore. The gun must be perfect or the shoulder will be damaged on one side. A truncated cone, WLN, WFN or RNFP will use the ogive to pull the cylinder into alignment.

For target shooters a wad cutter is a thing of beauty as it cuts the x ring.

It isn't about appearance, it is about performance.
