hey everyone this is about my 5th thread here and i just wanted to ask you guys if you think I hoard(I dont really, I am cash poor) however, I am anxious about supplies always, I feel that at any moment it all can dry up again for good. So I feel that someone like me cannot have enough powder, primers, brass, and lead etc.
so am I crazy?

I think I have about 23 lbs of powder, and it all gets used, accept 2 cans of IMR4227(I have 3 so the 3rd one is already getting tapped).
I have about 13,000 primers some a LPP mag, SP, LPP, LRP
Lead I am at about 400lbs mix of pure and COWW ingots
I own no Jwords but I have about 1000 plated from mixed companies

Haha!! My Garage would give a fire marshal a seizure.

The only time people have problems with hoarding is when they can't get a piece of their own.

Hoard up, be prepared, and enjoy the madness!!

I don't like the term "hoarding". I prefer to call it "laying in supplies". And you're right about people who don't like it. BTW, I like your quote from Atlas Shrugged. I've read the book twice, and intend to read it again. Amazing how it describes the world today. Dan.

Same here. I have thought about putting a sign on the house telling the fire department to run away and forget it.

Around here the term "hoarder" seems to be applied to anyone who has something that another wants , and the person in posession won't give it to the one wanting .

Of course you can't imagine those screaming the term can ya ?

Just a great book. All of Ayn Rand's writings are great. Even life changing. Such a beautiful woman with a great mind. She shook the nation to it's roots with her writings. She accomplished so much, smoked and drank single malt, and despised weak sauce people.

Sorry for the thread drift as I wax meloncholy this morning.

"Hoarder" is a term used by the "have nots" to describe those who had the foresight to plan ahead in anticipation of shortages, and lay in a little extra to get them by. What you already have is a good start by most standards, but I'd like to see you build on it a bit. I see I'm down a bit on powder myself, but primers are okay. Time to go shopping.

I was not sure if my anxiety was based in truth haha
and I can "lay in the supplies"
thank for the support!!!

I totally agree that I need to get more and that it is a good start, but only 2 cans of the 4227 I would consider surplus the rest is actively used.

Gotta love Lovelife............I'm in the same boat. A buddy of mine is in the local FD and he was in my basement a few weeks back wanting me to cure a reloading issue he was having. As he looked around he said; "Hey Art, we've been friends since high school so would it offend you if I asked you never to tell anyone I was here in the case you have a fire"? I told him not only would I not be offended, but I took that as a great compliment.

............we both had a good laugh.

And to the original poster? NO, you are not a hoarder, you're simply a good boy scout who is always prepared............<GRIN> You are in good company here pal............

typically a hoarder would be one who has a lifetime supply plus and no intention of ever ( NEVER EVER ) using it nor selling it and can not for the life of them stop acquiring more ( kind of like the old guy who beats me to all the ww's around town [sigh] )

In "The Ant and the Grasshopper" was the ant a hoarder or simply prepared for winter? I am 65 and may have more than I will ever use of some things. Does that make me a hoarder? Maybe, but you can call me anything you like except unprepared.

Remember the old BoyScout Motto?? Be Prepared.
If you purchase your supply when it is available to all. it is not hoarding, it is being prepared.
I do however prefer to rotate stock and replace what I shoot.

When I used to shoot a lot, I would always buy something at any gun show I attended. If I had opened my last sleeve of (whatever) primers, I would buy a back up. The same applied to my go to powders. Later on when I had trouble trying to find a place to shoot, or didn't have the time, I continued to make small buys at gun shows. Buying 1K of primers, a pound or two of powder, and a couple of thousand cast bullets doesn't constitute hoarding. On Sundays, there would always be someone selling left over cast bullets for a a very good price so he wouldn't have to carry them home. I have never sold any of those items, only gave away some to close friends who got caught short. In essence, I just did not want to run out of an item, but at the same time did not want an inordinate amount of anything. The only thing I messed up on was 22s. Who would have ever thought they would disappear?

Fellow Boy Scout here. Nowhere near the volume but even during the recent shortage I was not without some supplies. The shelf is slowly filling up again which is comforting. When I started to see pallets of bulk .223 and .308 at Sportsman's warehouse I knew powder and primers would start showing up shortly thereafter.

I've got coffee cans of cast/powder coated/lubed boolits, and all of my brass is either loaded or sized/trimmed/prepped. My pistol ammo stayed topped off with at least 5k of .40, 9mm, and 2k of .45 ACP. (Need to build up more.45 for sure)

I've had several buckets of .223 and 5.56 brass sized and ready for loading, just waiting to finish building 2 ARs (had to build momma's first) and make sure my standard load works. It does and so I've loaded 500 in the past few days with another 500 to be completed shortly. Momma is a shooter and so I'm sure 20 lbs of Lyman 225-415 55 gr boolits I've cast and powder coated won't last long.

I'm down to 1000 22 checks but my CheckMaker from PatMarlins will get here when he's done configuring for the new caliber. Life is good and getting better. It will be much better when I've got 8lb jugs of Unique, Bullseye, and 4227 on the shelf, 10k of small and large pistol, small and large rifle, and all of the brass is topped off. Trying to be a good Boy Scout.

You're off to a good start. Sounds like money is tight for you so as long as you are not shorting real necessities to stock up on shooting supplies you're doing just fine. Being prepared is about balance and not just being prepared with just shooting supplies for the zombie apocalypse.

Having said that if I were in your position I'd be suffering from a massive anxiety attack from lack of supplies.

My wife says I'm a hoarder..........

yep 150,000 primers are pretty worthless without the powder to burn, or the boolits to hold everything together.
you gotta have some balance there.
100 pounds of rice and 100 pounds of dried beans and enough water to cook them should keep the house from tipping over.

Unless you have more ammo than the government can bring to bear upon you if they decide that they don't like you, your religion, etc, you're nowhere close to a "hoarder". Personally, I don't think a person should even be considered for the classification of "hoarder" until he has at least 500 lbs of powder and 1M primers. Most people I know have around 50-100 lbs of various powders and around 20-50K of primers and I don't consider them "hoarders". Some have actually had to cut back their shooting because they don't want their supply of primers to get below 20K. They *thought* that they could ride out the hard times, but the leftists have definitely prolonged these hard times more than we originally expected.

fredj338
11-01-2013, 03:27 PM
No such thing as enough. I had enough primers in stock so I haven't missed a sat of shooting since the Obama plague of 08. I am always on the lookout for lead for casting, 1000# is a good start. Hoarding is keeping something you may never use. Stockpiling things you expect to use is just smart.

Like ammo there is only 2 kinds of supplies.
Enough and NOT enough!
If you think you may ever get to the "NOT ENOUGH" stage then you do not have enough.
You are only a hoarder IF you have more than a lifetime supply for yourself, your children and grandchildren, that's about 85 to 100 years supply.
I have over 2K# ingots and 1K+ of "ore" and not near enough of anything else!

Powder is still easy enough to find, but it might not be the powder you prefer. I figure that half the fun is coming up with new loads for whatever powder that might be available.

Quite a few different places... You just have to check frequently if they are not allowing backorders. If they are allowing backorders, you place your order and be prepared to wait *months* for it. Sometimes you just need to be prepared to substitute powders and develop new loads. Maybe they won't be optimal, but it's better than doing without.
