A month or so ago, Numrich Arms http://www.e-gunparts.com/ had new reproduction magazines for sale. I bought two. I cann't really tell the difference from my Remington magazine.
IIRC they're $30.00 a pop.

Congrats! I bought my 788 about ten years ago in a local pawn shop for $ 150; the kicker was there was no clip. I thought " no big deal " at the time; turned out it was several years before I found one.

Be careful about resizing your brass; I managed to break the extractor by not adequately sizing a case and then yanking on the bolt to remove it when it would not chamber. Wisner's has these, along with ejector's just in case something goe's wrong.

Bore on this rifle slugged .3084" with six grooves; I have used the Lee soup can along with the RCBS .308-180 SP and the group buy 31141 sized .310 and .311 and the rifle shoots really well with both Re-7 and surplus 4895.

Boy I sure would like to have a 788 in a 30-30.I don't know about that 450.00 dollars though....

About 30 years ago I bought a 788 at Wal-Mart for 89.95 and I thought that was to much money. Its only a old 222,but it does shoot cast very well. Just wish I would have bought a 30-30 instead......Terry

Often times the model 788 (Economy offering from Remington) would out shoot the model 700 (The Flagship line). This was some what of an embarassment to Remington. I was sorry to see the 788 production discontinued.

Back when the 788 was in full production, most owners found they would out-shoot almost everything else in the market. There was some discussion and even magazine articles that the 788's extremely fast lock time was resonsible for this. Some sources posted the measured 788 lock time against that of the 700, and there was considerable difference. I can't say whether this was the reason for accuracy by itself or if other factors weighed in, but practically every 788 I saw in action was a sweetheart at cutting beautiful groups if the shooter did his part!

I have owned two 788's in the past (one was .308, was "fixed up" and sold and the other was a 30/30). I haven't worked much with the 30/30 but intend to eventually.

The .308 was EXTREMELY accurate with those "J" word bullets. Did not try cast bullets...
