Anybody here shoot a 100 grain .358 boolit in a 38 special round? I have the ranch dog 6 cavity tumble lube mold and it makes a pretty boolit and lots of em. I thought it would be a great plinking load but was curious if anyone has done this. What's your load? Where to crimp ( no crimp groove)? Let me know what you guys think.

I have a 4 cavity RCBS mold that casts a 98 gr. TC. It works great in 38Spl.

2.5 to 3 gr. of BE or Clays makes a very economical load that even the most recoil shy usually like.

A crimp really isn't necessary with such a light bullet, just straighten out the flare on the case mouth is all you need. If you feel more comfortable with a little crimp you can use a 9mm size die with the decapping pin removed to apply a taper crimp.

Try it, you'll like it!

I want to get the 105 SWC lee 6 cav. Everyone raves about that mold but I haven't tried it.

I have that one and my lever action loves them. My 9mm guns hate them. Loaded up a bunch for low recoil rounds for my girls.

I have the 105 Lee. My .380s like it with 2.3 gr of Bullseye; my .38s like it with 3 gr of Bullseye. This for mild target rounds of course. So far no luck with it in 9mm, but I've only tried it once or twice.

Lite weight boolits and minimal amounts of powder make for economical shooting and just plain common sense for target work!

Lee 105 gr. SWC and 3.3 gr. of Red Dot - nice plinking load for the wife.

Lee 105 was my first mold, used it in 9mm and it worked great. Accurate and
100% feeding reliability. That was about 1976 or so.

It doesn't take a lot of weight or velocity to make holes in target paper.

Not quite O(n) T(opic), but just a suggested alternative or additional option.

Lyman 358101, 75 gr. WC, 2.0 gr Bullseye. Just happens to be a Wad Cutter case, R-P I think. With this depth boolit it shouldn't matter what case you use.

Haven't chronographed it, but it's my substitute for 22LR.

I've also shot a good deal of the Lee 105 TC. Love it!

With there being so much empty space in the case is there a need for something to keep the powder from floating all around the case?

Doesn't seem to be a problem so far. B'eye is an easily ignited, small geometry (size flake) powder. I've not shot this load below 60 deg. F.

One note: There's virtually no obduration, so it dirties up cylinders quicker than, say, a service load. I just keep a rod and brush handy. Revolvers are grand that way.

I have a copy of that same mould, Wally. I haven't tried them one-at-a-time yet. I have fired them stacked 2-deep in 38 Specials using wadcutter powder charges, and they hit fairly close together at 7 yards (2-3 inches) and 10-12 inches apart at 15 yards. I've seen evidence of a few hitting not-quite perpendicular to the target at 15 yards when fired in this stacked fashion--do your #358101s fly true to longer ranges when shot one per cartridge? This seems like something I need to try out.

Actually, I bought this mould (what a dream of a boolit to fool around with) with the single boolit load motivation, and I have been working mostly on the safety aspects. So light a powder charge gave me pause at first, but I found guidance in Lyman's 44th and have been experimenting in Model 10s of different lengths. In a Model 27, it's an air gun. I've been encouraged enough to think that it's time to start doing more disciplined work and taking thorough notes thereof. The high-end, high velocity information is a'plenty. Not so much way down low.

If agreeable, when I actually do get some experience worth sharing, I'll PM and/or snail mail/fax my results, and perhaps we can compare. All I've done so far, really, is bang away off hand to see if it looked and sounded right. It was too much fun to get real serious just yet.

To tease a little, I've got Lyman's 454309 and a pant load of AR brass for a Model 25 that is awaiting similar treatment.

And to reveal the full extent of my low-power, wad cutter sickness, I've been fooling around with .41 Special in Model 57s/657s.

And I am anxious to try the two-boolit loading that you've been using. Maybe back-to-back stacking?

I have the 100gr RD mold. SWEET little boolit.
I was shooting 38spl from my 357 but I had good results with

4gr Unique
3.7gr Bullseye
2.7gr Clays (best)

These all shot about the same in my gun with straight WW. I'm going to use the Cays load for rabbits this winter.

I'm gonna load up a batch this weekend and see how they shoot.

I loaded my twice-358101 loads with the base of the top boolit against the nose of the bottom boolit, and the light crimp set in the top boolit's crimp groove. I used 3.0 grains of WW-231 for these, IIRC. My original motive was to have Buckshot fire these from his K-38 and give him a real head-scratcher to ponder--12 holes after 6 shots--but I didn't have the heart to spring the trick on him. He is too nice a guy to have such low stunts pulled on him, and he REALLY likes his K-38.

(LOL) I just put myself in his predicament in my imagination. I'm not sure I'd have figured it out, but I'm going to keep it in mind for some of the lads at the club. Good one!
