$3.269 and a little higher at a couple of other stations. This is in Tunkhannock, Pa. Gas has been going down slowly here but diesel has been staying right around $3.959 which sucks cause I like driving my 350 with a 7.3 than my 250 with a 5.4. The 350 gets better mileage but once the difference was more than ~$.45 it started getting cheaper to drive the gasser.

From what I've gathered, that's because you don't have any refineries up there. You have to ship your oil down south and then the refined gasoline back up there. Even at that though, you're a LOT better than some of the European countries.

Did a run from my southeast Ohio Bug Out Location to Brighton, MI over the weekend

Here = 3.33 at the Marathon just off I-77 at Exit 25

Cambridge OH, Pilot = 3.23

Along I-70 as far as Columbus = 3.23 +/- .01

On Route 23 between Columbus and the MI line 3.17 to 3.19, one discounter was at 3.12 when I went by on Saturday, but they were back in line at 3.19 by the time I came back on Sunday. Outlier was the Pilot on Rt. 23 at Upper Sandusky (often the lowest) was at 3.23.

Pilot at Exit 5 in MI = 3.17 (on Sunday)

Once past exit 5 in MI it went up to 3.35 pretty fast. (It's always been that way, lived in MI for 15 years)

Saw one in-town station in Ann Arbor = 3.45 (They only sell to the rich college types.)

The amount of alcohol in the gasoline at the pump should be measured before filling the tank. I have seen 20 percent in gasoline, and only a few engines will run on that. The PID code section within the computer would (probably) have its static coefficients out-of-line for that kind of gas, which then would corrupt the correct dynamic PID operational feedback demand values. One good way to tell is gas mileage on a long straight away with no change in engine demand. Better the gas mileage, better the coefficients for that gas, at least for highway travel. Stop and go driving corruption can be told by the engine not stabilizing QUICKLY at a stop sign. The problem there can be worn out sensors, for example, and that would have to be fixed to get overall mileage up. ... felix

It is always best to buy gasoline at the busiest gas station, especially if alcohol is included. Why? Because alcohol can separate from the gasoline and that amount can be left behind in the underground tank, such that the amount left behind would append to the amount within the new gasoline purchased by the gas station. The end result is that more alcohol is contained within the gas in that big tank than is designed for that kind of gas. ... felix

I'm paying 3.45 for unleaded and 3.96 for diesel in the North Valleys of Reno. Being semi retired I find myself staying close to home anymore. Both my trucks get about 17 MPG. The only plus side of the high prices is that it has helped me cut way down on smoking. It's a 28 mile round trip to the nearest store to get a pack of smokes. I've also gotten good at not forgetting anything on my shopping lists when I go into Reno, that's a 48 mile round trip for me. I could move closer to town but I won't trade my peace and quiet for city life.

I get 12 mpg (at best) with gasoline that has been contaminated with ethanol and 16 mpg with real gasoline. But ethanol is supposed to reduce our consumption of gasoline, right? Not with my pickup.

So, let's figure a 100 mile trip...
With ethanol contaminated gasoline, I use 8.33 gallons (100 miles / 12 mpg) of fuel and since only 90% of that is gasoline and the other 10% is the ethanol contamination, I'm using 7.5 gallons of actual gasoline for the trip and .83 gallons of the ethanol contaminant.
With REAL gasoline, I use 6.25 gallons (100 miles / 16 mph) of actual gasoline for the trip.

So, the contamination of our fuel supply with ethanol is causing me to actually use more of the gasoline than if we were still using REAL gasoline. And that does not include the fuel that was used to produce that .83 gallons of ethanol that was used to contaminate our fuel supply. Maybe *some* vehicles can actually burn this cr*p, but my pickup HATES IT!

Ethanol has nothing to do w/ using less gas. It has everything to do w/ government corn subsidies. The switch to flex fuel vehicles has done nothing but drive up the cost of new vehicles. And it makes no sense for myself in PA. I don't know of any E85 pumps anywhere in the eastern part of the state.

Bret4207

I'm not even talking about the E85 stuff. I'm just talking about the stuff that is "mildly" contaminated with ethanol -- E10.

Of course, any engine that I have that is carbureted seems to HATE having ethanol in the fuel also unless I am always driving it. If I let it sit up for a few months, I'm guaranteed to need to get the carb overhauled.

Back when Ethanol was taking hold I threw a rod on my old 72 Chevy pickup. Had a 350ci motor but I thought I might get better mileage with a 283ci that needing a rebuild , was free. Thats what I did, rebuilt it, Discovered it needed 305 heads to fit the alternator and stuff , but valves were compatible. Anyway it ran sweet with a two barrel carb. But it would not idle with ethanol, straight gas was fine. I noticed no difference in mileage with 283 vs the 350. Ten to 12 was all I got . But ethanol was and is a terrible idea. Does give you poorer mileage for sure. Government telling you you need to get better mileage and then telling you your stuck with ethanol makes little sense. I do like to drink a little corn squeezings now and then though.

Ethanol has half the energy per pound as gasoline, so 10% ethanol 90% gas has 5% net less energy than straight
gasoline. You should expect about 5% worse gas mileage as a general rule.

So if you get 15 mpg in your car/truck, expect that to drop to 14.25 mpg if all else us unchanged. My Honda gets
about 35 mpg as a tank average with E10, so with straight gas, it should get 36.75 mpg.

Yeah, I know how it *should* work, but that's not how it *does* work in *my* truck. I've experienced this quite a bit over the years when I was working projects out of the Houston area where *real* gas can be bought. I have to wonder if putting 10% *water* in the fuel instead of ethanol would not be any worse. :( I much prefered MTBE as an additive to gasoline than ethanol. Besides, I could use gasoline with MTBE in my aircraft whereas I cannot use gasoline with ethanol in it.

Grumman is right on about this. Any kind of ether is mo'betta' than any kind of alcohol for combustion consistency, provided the eventual product is stored without water contamination. Then, they are both bad! The main problem is in the piping industry. The pipeline companies do not allow alcohol shipment, but will permit MTBE. Therefore, it boils down to where the retail gas station is located for the most part and their associated mixing stations. Of course, we all know politics sneaks into this equation: in particular the EPA, Farm subsidies, and other congressional favoritisms? ... felix

I have heard it argued that even if your vehicle does not have a problem with ethanol in the fuel mix, putting the ethanol in there instead of in the driver results in more fuel consumed. The argument centered on the assumption that a driver that had consumed that much ethanol just would not be driving that much.

"Putting ethanol in gasoline is a waste of perfectly good corn squeezings"

So, let's assume a 20 gallon tank. At 10%, that means 2 gallons of ethanol. Don't know about ya'll, but 2 gallons of 200 proof ethanol is going to cause me to drive a LOT less and sleep a lot more. :)

Well, if I'm willing to pay $5-6 per gallon, I can get 100 octane *leaded*. Which I have to burn in my plane since they have put ethanol in the auto fuel supply and thus I can't buy *unleaded*. Not sure how having to use leaded is better for the environment than unleaded with MTBE, but the eco-idiots have caused this.

$2.92 here in ABQ, NM...

Cheap by current standards in ABQ where there is no oilfield activity. Gasbuddy shows it even lower today. It's high in Lea County wher we live (the extreme southeast corner of the state) which is wholly dependant on the oil industry for its economy.

SWMBO and I took a road trip to see some historic New Mexico in late September includng the National Solar Observatory and Lincoln, where the Lincoln County War happened. Gas at home was $3.799 at EVERY station in town. Zero competition. In the remote mountain tourist trap of Cloudcroft it was $3.209 and $2.999 in Roswell. When we got home it was still $3.799. A couple of weeks later the local paper published an article that a gasoline price protest/rally was being organized by a local radio personality, independent of the radio station.

Even before the rally prices dropped about $0.25 all over town. One rally participant said that he saw a truck unload gas at a station in Hobbs at $3.79, followed it to Carlsbad and the same truck unloaded more fuel at $3.25 there. By the time of the rally the radio personality correctly reminded us not to be too happy about the price drop because at that time we were still paying 35-40 cents/gal more than surrounding cities.

It's at $3.29 now and surrounding communties in all directions outside of Hobbs and Seminole, TX are under $3.00. The two oil producing centers, the other being San Juan County (Farmington area) of NM have some of the highest gas prices. Gasoline is refined locally in the Farmigton area. Unfathomable.

Back in the day I had a 1970 plymouth GTX and it liked gasoline which premium cost me not wait for it.......34 9/10 cents a gallon and regular was around 29 9/10cents a gallon diesel was 18 9/10 cents a gallon delivered to your tank. Yep the good old days my income for the year was $2999 and I lived better than I do now by a long shot. You could leave your rifle in the rack behind your head in your truck and even have the windows down in the summer and no one would even give the truck a second look or think of taking your rifle. Today it would most likely get the swat team out and you would be on Utube with another abuse of police power and you might even be dead or in the hospital wounded hoping the nightmare would end. Yep we sure are better off today

imperial gallon approx 4.5 litre at a guess $8 a gallon

Imperial gallon = 4.54609 liters
US gallon (what people are quoting here) = 3.78541 liters.

Therefore £1.34 per liter * 3.78541 liters per US gallon = £5.072 per US gallon

$1.00 = £0.624473

£5.072 per US gallon * $1 per £0.624473 = $8.12205 per US gallon

I hear that diesel is cheaper than gasoline in Europe due to significantly more taxes being put on gasoline than diesel.

Friday I saw one place in Cedar Rapids at 2.77 the BP I use was 2.79 which is where I filled. These are introductory prices to the public for the introduction of mandated ethanol use. Paying a cheaper price the public isn't as inclined to notice the loss of fuel economy. This is all a result of the renewable fuels bill passed in 2005, we are being forced to use a product that couldn't stand on its own merit.

Inflation sucks. The government uses it to devalue the currency so that they can pay back their loans with money that is worth less than what they borrowed. I suspect that all governments do it, but some do it more than others.

According to this list of historical gas prices (https://www1.eere.energy.gov/vehiclesandfuels/facts/2012_fotw741.html) and this inflation calculator (http://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm), $3 in 2013 would be the equivalent of $0.50 in today's money whereas the gas prices in 1970 were $0.35 per gallon.

From the historical gas prices article:

Price of a Gallon of Gasoline, Current and Constant Dollars, 1929-2011
https://www1.eere.energy.gov/vehiclesandfuels/images/facts/fotw741.gif

Remember when we used to think that having the magical number of $1M in savings would allow you to just sit back and live on the interest for the rest of your life? That might have been the case back in 1970, but according to the above inflation calculator that $1M from then is $6,034,768.04 now. So, even if you have $1M in investments in today's dollars, don't think that you are going to be able to retire and not have to budget your expenses.

Like I said, "inflation sucks".

Yeah, I remember thinking that... Then when my portfolio hit $1M a few years back, I felt a sense of accomplishment in my investment choices. It's a nice number for those of us who are old enough to remember when "being a millionaire" was this goal that seemed unattainable. Thanks to inflation, it's very attainable these days. :( At that time, I ran the numbers and there was no way that I felt that I could retire (i.e. not work plus not continue to actively manage my stocks). I probably work less hours these days in my chosen profession, but I don't dare take a "vacation" to somewhere that doesn't have internet access. I don't want to miss taking advantage of any swings in the stock market. I have been at the gun range, received a notice that one of the stocks that I was following had dropped, bought it, and then sold it at the end of the day for $1K in profit. A fairly productive trip to the gun range, I think. :) I'm nowhere near a "day trader" (i.e. buy and sell the same stock multiple times per day), but I do keep a pretty close eye on what my stocks are doing and buy and sell on some of the swings (i.e. anywhere from multiple days or sometimes months between stock purchases and sales). I'm beating the S&P500, DJIA, and NASDAQ for the last 10 years, so I think I might be doing *something* right. In a lot of ways, it's kind of addicting, like a video game, but with results that will affect your future life.
