WOO HOO !!! Took my first deer with my own cast. Encore 209 x 50 muzzle loader, 90 gn. 777 loose powder, 350 gn. Lee fp, mix was coww, and MMP orange sabot for 457-458 Boolit. I think I may need to soften the mix for this, it was my first try so I was'nt sure how it would go. Deer was about 75 yards away angled toward me shot her in the left front shoulder Boolit exited right rear Ham she went about 60 yards and left a blood trail that Ray Charles could have followed and there was minimal meat damage. Got 43 lbs. of Burger 10 lbs of steaks, 5 lbs of roasts and 5 lbs. cubed meat for gravy over butter noodles. Heart is pickling now and the inside loins are in a marinade for tonight's supper. Yea I'm a pretty happy camper!!

Thanks for all the help folks!! I would have never tried if it were'nt for the good people here.

Randy, The Birddog.

Good job. Nothing like making a kill with your own boolits.

doesn't sound like you need to soften the boolit too much to me.
it didn't come apart and went straight line in it's penetration, I like it.

Congrats! Sounds like excellent performance to me as well....would you mind posting that cubed meat w/ gravy over noodles recipe over in the recipe section? I'm drooling on my keyboard here!

Great, it's good to have your boolits be able to penetrate on woods type raking shots from any angle and perform well. You never know it could of been a big deer and the angle was just the opposite. Now you have a better vision of what your boolit can do (probably a good tunnel wound the length of boolit travel) and have confidence in it when a more deliberating shot can be taken for the vittles you mentioned.:)

Congrads on the deer!!!!! Boolit did it's job well, and left little meat damage. Thats perfect in my book.

Perfect! Don't start to try and improve with expansion if it worked.

Great report & welcome to the wonderful world of cast bullet shooting. Taking that first head of game really puts the excitment back into hunting. I wouldn't change a thing, one of the great things about cast slugs is you can take a bad angle shot as long as the vitals are somewhere between the starting point & the exit & everything will be just fine, you proved it! Another thing with cast, unless you hit bone you can usually eat the bullet hole, can't say that about jacketed.

Thank you much folks!! I did'nt consider some of the things you are explaining so maybe I'll just leave things alone. I guess if it aint broke don't fix it' applies here so that's just what I'll do.

I would leave well enough alone as the others have said

Congrats!
There is a different level of satisfaction with casting your own boolets, and using them for hunting!

My first CB kill was only a couple of years ago, haven't used a j-word to kill a game animal since!

Again many thanks, and as I stated earlier if it was'nt for the fine folks here giving such wonderful advice I probably would have never tried to hunt with cast I would have just kept using it for plinking and practicing now I'm going to try with my center fire pistols and rifles also hopefully all will go well there also. You never know till you try!!

What time did you say dinner was tonight?

Love to hear about folks providing for themselves (pretty much) the way it was done 200 years ago.
