Hello Folks,

I’m planning a stubbed-barrel cartridge conversion on an H&R Ultra Hunter. At this time I’m undecided on the cartridge. My purpose in this conversion is twofold: I want a barrel to shoot 35, 366, or 375 caliber jacketed bullets at 2400 fps, and cast bullets at 1800 fps. Although the H&R extractor will grasp a rimless cartridge, I prefer rimmed.

One possibility is the family of cartridges based on the 444 Marlin case, and this may be where I end up. The necks tend to run a little short for my tastes, as I prefer a cast bullet with ample lube grooves. I’ll probably end up using a gas check bullet design, and I like to keep the check in the case neck.

Another possibility would be a cartridge based on the 9.3x74R case, including the parent cartridge. The builder may balk at this suggestion, objecting that this is too much power for the H&R. As an experienced handloader I will tailor the loads to the gun, but the gunsmith doesn’t know me.

Yet another cartridge I’m considering is the 356 Winchester. The reduced case capacity and short neck don’t appeal to me, but I’ve always thought this was probably a good cartridge for shooting jacketed bullets.

At this time I’d like to start a discussion on cartridges. What are your suggestions?

Thanks, Tom

You want a 358 Bellm.

Scroll down to the .375 Flanged Magnum. Basically the .375 H&H with a rim on it for double rifles.

I talked to Mr. bellm at Bellm's TC's once about a .356 winchester bbl. for my Encore. He said he could make it with a rebated recess in it also so you could fire .358 winchester in the same bbl....2 different cartridges...one bbl.
That's cool!

You could also do something off the .45-70 case. The .35 version, or a .35 version, was called the .35 Greevy express if memory serves. There is the .38-56 Winchester which is an old fashioned looking case because there is so much taper to it but I think it would give you about the ballistics you want in a strong rifle. You could do a .33 Winchester, though that is a bit smaller than you suggested, it is a factory round. The advantage to all of these is you can make them from .45-70s and those will be around for a long time.

IF you can find the brass, the .375 Winchester MIGHT work. The 358 Belm has a longer neck than the 358 jdj. There IS the .375 magnum Flanged. Brass can be found for it. I do not know WHY you want this big bore, but I wish you luck getting it together!
Maybe a round based on one of the big English rounds may work to keep pressures down.

Good luck with your cannon, I would work with something based off the 45/70....JMHO

May as well go all the way if the 444 class case is too small, 358 Norma, or 358 STA. If that's too big, consider 350 GNR.

holy liking recoil.
I was thinking the 375 Winchester but it shoots either cast or jaxketed about the same speed.
and I don't think the 200gr jaxketed will hit 2400 fps.
and the only way you are gonna make 2400 with a 45-70 is with a 300gr boolit and a beat down from recoil.
a 375 ruger will but so will the H&H and it has a longer neck to work with.
the stubbed barrel is not gonna work in your favor either but the 35 whelen is something i'd look at.
