I need to rebarrel a S&W model 10 in 38spl that has a damaged barrel without breaking the bank, so I was wondering if anyone knows which, if any, other models barrels will switch out with the model 10?

Will any Taurus barrels interchange?

What threads were used on the model 10s?

I plan on shooting 38 cast wadcutters in it probably around 148 grain.

Taurus barrels may have metric threads.
Check with Brownells, (one of our sponsors) the may have one.

Because of front sight heights, barrel lengths, pinned vs none pinned, standard vs. heavy barrels it best to replace your barrel with a model 10 barrel of the same length and contour if you are going to do this on your own. Check ebay and Sarco for barrels. There seemed to be a lot of barrels for M10s on eBay last year when I was looking for one. Re barreling older S&W revolvers is normally pretty painless, they are not turned up too tight and they are easy to get timed with simple tools.

Look on GunBroker; there are usually a dozen Model 10 barrels of various ages and conditions for sale.

One thing to be aware of :-). George Nonte in his book "pistolsmithing" shows a hammer handle being used in the cylinder cut out of a revolver to remove or install a barrel, you CAN easily bend a K frame this way, trust me you can :-).

An L frame is a lot beefier, I did a barrel swap on one then tried a K frame....ooops. The L frame I had a local smith who had the vice blocks remove the barrel, then tried the hammer handle to put it back on, worked great :-).

Try looking on gunbroker; I have seen S&W bbl's that I am guessing are from destroyed buy-back hand guns; revolvers parts will usually have the bbl, cylinder, hammer, side plate, trigger, springs, screws. The common 4" K frame parts usually sell at reasonable prices the 2" K-frame prices are usually pretty high.

Hi,
Is there some reason you can't send it to smith and wesson? Tell them "no workee" and they will probably fix it for free!

I have several of the 4" model 10 heavy barrels and a couple of 6" model 15 barrels. They'll have to be set back or timed and the rear of the barrel cut off to proper cyl gap. PM me, I'll let one go cheap.
