View Full Version : The Wonders of Spam

I was enjoying a breakfast of grilled peppered spam on toast. I got to pondering on that wonderful and tasty meat product. Spam is possibly the greatest invention since the 1885 Highwall. Spam is tasty, easy to prepare in many different ways, nourishing and healthy. I can remember my days in the Army when we would have spam for breakfast, often mixed with scrambled eggs. Brisk mornings in the field when they would chopper out melmack cans full of green eggs and chopped spam. Or, powdered eggs and spam. Spam SOS was a real treat. The Army fed it's soldiers right back in the day. Now days, Bacon Spam is to die for. I am sure many of you still enjoy setting down to a good plate full of spam. :bigsmyl2:

Ugh!! C'mon guys! Spam= heart attack waiting to happen. High fat, high salt content. Keep on eating tons of that stuff (and stuff like it) and you'll be consulting with a cardiologist on a regular basis, if you're lucky. Ask me how I know.

If the Army served that stuff to the troops on a regular basis, it wasn't because it was good and healthy for them, it was because it was cheap and quick to prepare.

Heart attack? Whaddaya wanna do? Die healthy?

When I was a kid we ate home butchered beef, home grown chicken, and home butchered pork because we could not afford spam or much other from the grocery store.
When I went to university and boarded in students residence I was amazed about the attitude of students on Saturday (Steak night in the cafeteria). Because we butchered and cut our own I regarded steak as simply beef and did not put a value on it.

One of the neighbors was an apprentice butcher in German in the 1920s before he immigrated to Canada and he taught my Dad how to make some sausages.
Spam is sort of the equivalent of head cheese.... you really do not want to know what is in it.

Sorry, I'm with gnoahh--I don't worry about what I eat, but when I die, I would like something with a good taste in my mouth, like liver, sauerkraut or something, not ground, flavored fat. Most of the people around my house love it, but I don't. This is like a McRib sandwich.

I had to chuckle recently when Andrew Zimmern, the guy who travels around the world eating truly nasty-sounding stuff for the TV show "Bizaare Foods", stated that Spam was one of the few foods he despised. This from a guy who smacks his lips over stuff like monkey brains and rotten fish.

To each his own. Everything in moderation. I like a Spam sandwich maybe once a year to remind me of the cr*p I foolishly ate when I was younger.

My dad was a WWII vet and growing up we ate spam for breakfast on Sunday mornings. Now I loved my old man but if I never see another can of that stuff I will consider my self Blessed beyond compare. Fried, with brown sugar and he was firmly convinced that. It was as good as Mom's baked ham , I can still remember him smiling as he cooked it. Cubed and made into hash, nasty!
The only recipe I cared for was to take a pine board , smear peanut butter on it slice the spam and lay it on top of the peanut butter and bake for twenty minutes @ 325. For twenty minutes . When done throw the spam away and eat the pine board.

When I was in Italy last year escorting WW2 vets, our hosts were veterans of the Alpini Regt. and they took SPAM and used it for meatballs in pasta. Cut the SPAM into approximately 1" cubes, roll in beaten egg, then in polenta (coarse ground corn meal), sea salt and red pepper, then fry to golden brown with crushed garlic and olive oil, sprinkle with shaved Romano cheese and serve with pasta and your favorite sauce. Ours was a white sauce with calimari and clams, washed down with a double expresso with a shot of grappa in it. In bocca al lupo!

SPAM isn't my favorite meat dish on earth, but it has fond attachments in memory to some very enjoyable events--fishing trips and deer hunts in my youth, campfires shared with good men and mentors, and meals tossed together from what-have-you near the end of a trip when you're ravenous from a day afield, and the free-form potluck that always seemed to feature SPAM as its meat base.

My Father loved Spam, my Grandfather on my mothers side loved spam; me it literally made me sick with the remnants found on the floor at some time a few minutes after ingestion. Haven't had a bite of it in 56 years and counting.

I will say that I am not a particularly finicky eater, love to eat off of street vendor stands across the world. No problems with baked or fried bugs, dog, slimy fish/sea food stuff, or even an occasional Balut in the Philippines (Balut - A fertilized chicken or duck egg is buried in the ground for a week, after which the egg — containing a half-formed fowl — is soft-boiled. Balut is eaten out of the shell with a spoon. When a partially formed bone or feathers is stuck in the teeth it can be a little strange).

I will say that strangely, I can eat canned ham with no problems, although it is a 2nd cousin to SPAM.

In the hunting camp with 3-4 members, dice and brown Spam in cast iron skillet.
Grade 3-4 potatoes while Spam is cooking. Remove Spam from skillet and put graded potatoes to cook, add a little onion.
when potatoes are turned add browned Spam. When potatoes are nearly done add 3-4 scrambled eggs and top with mild cheddar cheese. When cheese is melted serve while hot. And don't forget the coffee.

Spam Dogs: Cube SPAM @3/8", mix with diced yellow onion, dill pickles, and Monterrey Jack cheese, add as much yaller mustard and mayo as you would for a 'tater salad, fill hot dog buns, and bake #350 until the buns are toasted. Old family recipe.

Also, finely dices SPAM W/eggs and bread crumbs make fine "patties" if pan-fried. Can be served like a salmon/mackerel patty or with bread/burger buns and is good with ketchup or A1.

Actually, this page at Wiki ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spam_(food)#Nutritional_data ) has some good data on Spam.

Ingredients:
"The labeled ingredients in the classic variety of Spam are chopped pork shoulder meat, with ham meat added, salt, water, modified potato starch as a binder, sugar, and sodium nitrite as a preservative. Spam's gelatinous glaze, or aspic, forms from the cooling of meat stock."

Nutrition:
"Spam is typically sold in cans with a net weight of 340 grams (12 ounces). A 100-gram (3.5-ounce) serving of original Spam provides 1,300 kJ (310 Calories or kilocalories), 13 grams of protein (26% DV), 3 grams of carbohydrates (1% DV), 27 grams of total fat (41% DV), including 10 grams of saturated fat (49% DV). The cholesterol content of Spam is 70 milligrams (23% DV). A serving also contains 57% of the recommended daily intake of sodium (1369 milligrams). Spam provides the following vitamins and minerals: 0% vitamin A, 1% vitamin C, 1% calcium, 5% iron, 3% magnesium, 9% potassium, 12% zinc, and 5% copper."

SPAM is for the unwashed masses. If you want the good stuff get a can of TREET. The official breakfast for the opening day of squirrel season in Kentucky (okay, maybe just in Bell County) is cubed TREET and chunks of pineapple cooked over an open fire in a cast iron skillet. No silverware or plates required, just take your carry knife an skewer a chunk.

My father was a battalion surgeon with the 7th Division during WWII and served throughout the entire Pacific campaign, from the Aleutians, to the Marshalls, to the Philippine Islands and finally, to the Ryukyus, specifically, Okinawa, where he was awarded the Bronze Star with V for Valor, promoted from Second Lt. to Major and somehow managed to contract yellow fever which ended his tour of duty and brought him home at last. On the rare occasion when we could get him to talk about his experiences during the war, one of his most vivid memories of those years in the Pacific was of eating Spam on such a frequent basis that when he finally came home he could no longer even look at a can of Spam without getting physically ill! I guess that's what is meant by the old saying, 'too much of a good thing!!'

Ive never eaten spam or seen it in any supermarket. Cans of corned beef aplenty but no spam,It must be available as we have a very large Samoan and pacific island population living here. It does not look very appetizing to me.

Spam made me the camp cook I am! Fished and camped a lot with an uncle who lived to fish and spam was his breakfast and supper staple. He opened a can of Ranch Style Beans, cubed a can of Spam and heated this and served over white bread. I learned to cook good meals in camp even before Boy Scouts as a self defense measure. I eat spam, but don't want it at every meal.

Guess it was successful as I an at the National Dutch Oven Gathering at Lake Degray AR right now and teach outdoor cooking all over the place, including NRA Whittington Center in NM. This morning we will have biscuits and gravy from a Dutch oven, mountain man breakfast, and bacon, eggs and pancakes on the griddle for 40 or so friends in camp. Coffee has been available since 4 AM.

Hello to all my spam bretherin. And I thought I was the only one I knew who liked it. One of my buddies when he found out that I like spam said "spam is ham that failed the physical". Went into our pantry and plopped a can on the table. Frank

The residents of the state of Hawaii consume the most Spam per capita in the United States. Hawaiian Burger King restaurants began serving Spam in 2007 to compete with the local McDonald's chains. In Hawaii, Spam is so popular it is sometimes referred to as "The Hawaiian Steak". One popular Spam dish in Hawaii is Spam musubi, where cooked Spam is combined with rice and nori seaweed

A lady I used to work with was helping her daughter with a survey: Ham or SPAM? Of course I said SPAM. The look she gave me was hilarious! My sister in law has always had SPAM in her kitchen. One day I saw her slice it and proceeded to make a sandwich. I asked her why don't you fry it? She looked at me and you could she the light bulb turn on. She said she had never thought of that! My wife and daughter have never touched SPAM. Oh well the more for me!!
