hello everyone, just purchased a 223 14" bull barrel for my contender and was wondering what would be a good cast boolit weight/design for the 14" barrel . if im thinking right it has a 1 in 14" twist ????? i'll be wanting to purchase a mold soon but just trying to see what everybody uses with the contender.
thanks in advance.

I am using Lee's Bator boolit (54 gr soup can) in both my 223 and 222 TC barrels. The 222 shoots great but the 223 is still a work in progress. Since both have the same twist, it just may take a little extra load development to get the 223 to work as well.

The twist is designed to stabilize a 55-60 gr bullet at 3000+ fps so for the 2000-2400 fps range that works well with cast boolits it is best to go with a mold that drops in the 35-45 gr range. Either NOE's copy of the 225107 or the Lyman 225438.
Go to Castpics.net and read the articles on shooting cast in the .223 for lots of great advice.

I found that 7grs of 700X with the Lyman boolit with a gas check worked very well.

I have been using the Lyman 225215 for a long time in the 14" 223 TC. I have two of that mold # and they throw different weights. One is 45gr and the other is 55gr., both shoot well in my TC.

Y'all may find the Border Barrels stability calculator of use. http://www.border-barrels.com/barrel_twist.htm It seems 1.5 stability factor is a reasonable minimum, though BR shooters seem to tend towards 1.2-1.3 which seems to be of use when CG does not agree with center of form and the faster they spin, the worse this effect.
