Well I want your guys opinions on if you think this is going to work and it's more of a gimmick then anything else but I like the idea.

Alright I've done some zinc/alum casting in 9mm and I can push a 50gr zinc bullet 1700fps with low pressure the problem is I don't have a fast enough powder for a 4.5in barrel. Tho it makes some good dents in 1/4 steel. Well yesterday me and the cousin were out shooting and his ak made a nice dent in the 1/2 steel plate that we had but the mosin went through it. Got me thinking about loading a Zinc alloy (probably zakam 2 so the addition of copper) for the mosin nagant. Want to see how much steel a light bullet with a hardness around 100 brinell going super fast will go through.

I want to hit 4000fps with it so I was thinking the 115gr lyman mold #311359. That should cast around 70gr zinc alloy and Quickload says I can hit just over 4000fps. Do you guys think this is doable? Any downside to doing this? I have a 91/30 so I would think the powder will all be burnt before the bullet reaches the end.

I'm sure it probably is doable, what powders is quickload recommending? I've shot the Win 123 gr jacketed at 3200 fps in 91/30 so would imagine a 70 gr with right powder could reach 4k or so?

it doesn't recommend a powder I've just been throwing some in and most come out about 4000fps.

this is with a OAL of 2.800 and a 70gr #311359 mold. All data right at max

54.5grs H4198=4189fps
65.8grs Varget=4209fps
65.0grs IMR4895=4279fps

I've just been guessing on powders that might work well if anyone has a suggestion for more velocity and Quickload has it I'll see what the numbers are.

Also I'm guessing the OAL is way to long but unless someone reloads the #311359 I won't know till I try it.

I4198, I3031, and H322 are used with the .308 Win sabots w/55gr bullet to 4000, so you're well within reason. I don't know if zinc is up for a fast ride through a rough tunnel.

Here are the Quickload results of the powders you listed. Thanks IMR 3031 is the fastest so far

IMR 4198=4255fps
IMR 3031=4397fps
H322 = 4309fps

I don't know if zinc is up for a fast ride through a rough tunnel

Only one way to find out but Zamak 2 looks like some pretty strong stuff I've only cast Zamak 3 so far.

Here's some info on it off of Wiki

Ultimate tensile strength = 58,000 psi
Impact strength = 28 ft-lbf (5 ft-lbf aged)
Shear strength = 46,000 psi
Compressive yield strength = 93,000psi
Brinell Hardness = 130 Brinell (98 Brinell aged)

Well I have thought about trying to replicate the Czech short range practice ammo with a zinc boollit . This is a little more ambitious , Paper patching might avoid any zinc fouling problems

I have the gold Hi tek coating if I do this i'll probably get some of the slick extreme catalyst and see if it holds up. I've never had any foaling that I could tell in the 9mm but there's a big difference in velocity to.
