View Full Version : Any reason this PID + SSR combo won't work?

Just curious, I'm not well versed in the PID conversions but it seems they normall cost $50+. Found this PID + SSR on ebay and it appears to have everything needed to run a LEE 20lb pot. Am I right?

well yes, it has everything you need - except for a thermocouple, the wiring, switches, enclosure, wire ends, and everything else that actually goes into making one.
The price is not exceptional either.

The thermocouple is the other major component you need. Look for a stainless probe with braided stainless covering the wire. Four inch length is perfect for a Lee 20lb pot. If you plan to disconnect it from your controller you might prefer one with a standard connector and use the mating connector on your project, otherwise you'll need to connect the tc directly to the controller.

There are several 'types' of thermocouples and the controller can work with them however type K is the most predominant and is low-cost.

That may only measure in Celsius.

That would sort of suck! But I truly doubt it's C only, my Mypin lets you choose. And choose thermocouple type.

The most common Cº only are the cheap models by 'Sestos'.
Most other offer an option. Mypin is one of those.

BTW the TD4 is a full 4" long. It's the same case as the Auber 235x series.
The TA4 models are only 3" deep.

For those who remember the input offset problem on the Mypins - That has been fixed in the last upgrade this june.

If that isn't an exceptional price then I must be missing the PID's at better pricing. Can you point me in that direction?

I'm not worried about the thermocouple or enclosure, I'll come up with something for the enclosure and I have thermocouples, and they-re super-cheap on ebay...

For another $7 you can get this one with thermocouple: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280879156946#ht_3935wt_1156

I'd be interested in that also. I have thought about making my own larger pot and adding a PID to it since I will be building it from the ground up. That price, for the PID controller and a 40 amp SSR, seems to be pretty good to me. If there is a better price out there I would certainly like to know.

Well how about this? THIS (http://www.ebay.com/itm/PID-Digital-Temperature-Control-Controller-K-ThermoCouple-Senor-25DA-SSR-TR-/181213343090?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a31282d72)

Now it's only a 25 amp SSR but I doubt ANYONE has 25A 110V in use. A 40A SSR is not needed, if you need more than 15A you should be running 220V.

also the thermocouple is only good for a lubesizer so you need to spend $10 more for a correct style TC; but then you'd have a controller for your sizer as well.

There is this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/100-240V-Digital-PID-Temperature-Controller-max-40A-SSR-K-Thermocouple-Probe/141060914291?_trksid=p2047675.m2109&_trkparms=aid%3D555003%26algo%3DPW.CAT%26ao%3D1%26 asc%3D17823%26meid%3D1749480703583378924%26pid%3D1 00010%26prg%3D8234%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D15%26sd%3D1808 56057257%26) as well -40A SSR but still not the TC you need.

What was that sign my dad kept above his desk???
something about oats that have been through the horse being cheaper than quality oats.

I can sell you exactly what you need.

40 amp devices have the longer term ability for uncompensated 110 or 220 single phase motors, especially start-ups. Frozone is correct about such applications. ... felix

400 C = 752 F Even if it did fail over time as your posts in other threads indicate may happen, you wouldn't have to get the upgraded thermocouple to start with. You could go with that one first and replace if it fails...

Is that brand PID reliable? The one I linked to is a Mypin which I believe is fairly reliable right?

Frozone, no offense to you, I know you're trying to sell a product and I could easily just buy it all from you, but I do nearly everything myself, not because I am forced to for financial reasons or anything, but because I enjoy it and it keeps me active.

I have one of Frozone's kits. I'll be putting it together this weekend. If it doesn't have everything you need, I have no idea what you would add. The instructions appear very complete, concise and come with pictures. Putting this kit together took a lot of experience and attention to detail.

Those PIDs that only read out in Celsillyous are acceptable if you run the numbers and print the conversion chart. Put it on your bench and don't worry. That's what I did until I sent the (chin) seller a question and he explained how to change the display to fahrenheit.

He's OK in my book, chin or not.

No Offense taken. I'm trying to help you and you don't want to listen, no problem.

By "I can sell you exactly what you need" I meant the PID, SSR, and thermocouple only.
I don't offer Just the components as general rule.
I can't afford to order in quantities of 1K or more, so I can't match ebay prices.
I only order 50 PIDs at a time that's over $250 shipping alone.
Same with TCs - a box of 100 is $189 just for shipping.
Best I could do for the 3 main parts is $55 + shipping.
