I am gathering some casting equipment and hope to start casting in the new year. I picked up a couple of old Lyman 2-cavity molds, one was a 311407. I am wanting to cast for .308, .30/06, 7.62x54R and maybe .30-30.
I am only a plinker, and looking for a good all-around mold.

Will this mold do what I am looking for?

Thanks,
Bill

Seems like one of the better ones I think.

GearShanty,

Welcome to the site...

Many people seem to like the 311407 so it should serve you well! You may need to size it differently (ex .310, .312, ...) for each of the calibers though.

I believe that the 7.62x54R came in two different bore diameters, so you will need to see which one you have to determine if the boolits can be sized appropriately.

...............GearShanty, a hearty welcome aboard! IMHO if you had to start with one mould, the 311407 is one of the best. I don't know what Lyman was thinking (maybe they weren't?) when they discontinued it. That's one that will bring big money on E-Bay.

My copy of it will drop WW alloy boolits at around .311". Might go .312" with lino. Depending upon what your Rooski's groove slugs, you may or maynot be able to use it. If not get the Lyman 314299. Also with that Loverin design, you don't need to fill all the lube grooves. I'd start by filling half of'em and see how it goes.
