I have a CVA Elite Tracker w/ 24" barrel and was looking to shoot something a bit milder than 2000 fps Armbruister loads. Whitetail at around 100-150 yards is the intended quarry. Have some Ranch Dog 275 ish boolits.

Was thinking of something using 2400 or 4198. Any ideers?

I use a Lyman 429640 and 16.0 grains of Unique---1,600 FPS... Year ago I used Blue Dot to get 2,200 fps...

Am looking for 1700 fps (approx) with a 275 grainer-thanks though.

Somewhere between 23 and 25 grains of 2400 ought to be exactly the load you're looking for. A 3/4 grain tuft of dacron for a filler--see Larry Gibson's writing in the stickies section--and I think you'll be in like Flynn.

30-33 grains of 5744 might also be worth investigating, though I've never actually tried that one. Can't help you with the 4198 loading--only gun I ever loaded with that powder was a .222! (That's like, half a .444 but twice as accurate.

Thanks for the info rintinglen. I looked for Larry's writeup. While I found lots of other very interesting stuff, I didn't see anything on .444 loads. Maybe will look closer! I used that 25 grain load with a 260 grain (by weight) RCBS gaschecked SWC boolit but never chronoed it. I will try to do that today with those Ranch Dogs and see how they do. I see Buckshot has done some work along those lines and looks like his velocities came out a little lower so we will see. I'll post them up here and give some accuracy results if possible.

Went out today and the usual great loads shot all over the place. I am switching scopes tomorrow and will head out to the range sometime next week. Had to cast up some more Ranch Doggers as I shot all the ones that Don gave me. Boy, some days at the range are better than others...but "Even a bad day at the range is better than the best day at work!" hah hah...I have it so bad=NOT!
