Specifically, Waco.
I travel all over north america for my job and my travels have brought me back to Texas. This time to Waco. I have never visited Waco before so I am excited to see what the area has to offer.
Wish me luck!

I had forgot about the Texas rangers Hall Of Fame, it is a must see. I am not real keen on museums, but have spent several hours there twice.

Thanks everyone. I will have to carve out some time this week to see that for sure.

+1 on the ranger museum. They have Clayton Moore's revolvers there. Those are a definate must see. The Nuge lives in that area too. Less than 2 hours from Ft. Worth and Austin. Not the most central location for the major cities, but not bad.

There's tons to see in that general area. You will be just south of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, and just north of Temple/Belton area. There used to be some neat LGS's in the little towns out there. Haven't been there in 5 or 6 years, so dunno. Also, there were a couple of good LGS/pawn shops in Waco. Plenty of good eats in that town, also.

+1 on the Ranger Museum! We went through it years ago when I was in LE. Clint Peoples (former Texas Ranger & US Marshall) was a director back then. Happened to meet him and he showed us around and even took us into the office areas to see some of the Remington sculptures and famous paintings that are back there, that the public normally would not see. Great way to spend an afternoon.

Check out Unique Guns. They have powder and primers in stock and good prices on guns. Keith's Ace Hardware is good too. Praco Pawn has a good selection but arent very friendly.

Georges has a good beer and good home cooked food. A Waco institution. Cheddars has a good sirloin. Plenty good Mexican food.

So far this is some big pretty country!
I'm working in the McGregor area, and the ride back to Waco every evening has been nice. It is a neat mix of farmland rolling into those shallow valleys. My only regret so far is that I don't have more time to explore, and that I didn't bring my camera.
The truth is that when I'm at a customer site, it is like any other job. I'm there at 6:30 am and leave at 7:00, so my drown time is limited. But I'm hoping that I can back down here for a two week trip and have a weekend to roam around.
Thanks so much for the warm welcome everyone!

The Coffee Cup in McGregor has a steller lunch buffet. Home cooking with real mashed potatoes. Their mac and cheese is really good too. Id say go check out the lake but the government shutdown has closed all access.

If you go due west of McGregor, on 84, I think, you get to Gatesville. Just east of Gatesville on Hwy 36 is a historical marker for Ft. Gates, one of the original frontier forts of TX back in the 1840's and '50s. The marker is close to the main gate of N. Fort Hood and the TxARNG training area. I can't remember if Gatesville has any good gunshops or not, now. It used to.

Good morning
I sure enjoyed my year in central Texas years back (2nd Armored). I would have no problem settling in one of the fine small towns that cover that friendly AO. A favorite area of mine was Stagecoach Road and Commanche Gap. Nice on a 750 Norton. Good fishing out on Belton Lake.

At the stoplight next to the McDonalds in Gatesville is a pretty good gunshop. Havent been there in a year or two but they had a LOT of guns some of them pretty hard to find

Just got home on Friday night. Overall, it was a good trip, both work and personally as well. My big regret was not being able to get to the Texas Ranger museum. I just could not get out of the customer site early enough to do so.
Very pretty country, I can see how people fall in love with it. I hope to get back down there soon on vacation to really explore.

Travelling from ElPaso to Texarkana is the about the same as from Texarkana to Chicago. 750 miles give or take. ... felix
