I am restoring a Ideal #1 lubesizer. The only thing I need is a pressure nut. Does anyone know if the current 450/4500 one will fit? I made one today on the lathe. But when I tried to screw it on to the rod it only made it 2.5 turns onto the treads. I thought they were 3/8-24 threads. Nope they are 3/8-20  Why the hell would they make them 3/8-20???? That is not a std thread size. 3/8-16 and 3/8-24 are.

I can't answer your first question but the second is easy. The design goes back to the late 1800's/early 1900's. Nothing was standard then.

I have had three different ideal #1 sizers.
Yeah, the threads on my three were a different pitch then the lyman 45 and newer lyman units. I didn't know exactly what the pitch is though...I guess now I do (3/8-20).
thanks,
Jon

PS, sorry I don't have an extra one for you.

I'll have to check, I think I gave away my spare #1 lube piston.

The 3/8x20 thread pitch comes from the same place as their 30 pitch dies for the 310. At the time, they weren't worried about any kind of standard, and used the pitch that their machinists told them was correct for the application. A 20 pitch thread requires fewer turns to move the same distance as a 24 pitch, a 16 pitch might have been too course.

Why not order these, problem solved.

not exactly solved but close enough that a lil machining will make it work

I might just have to go that route.

Got my packages from Lyman today. The new pressure nut is the same as the one that the Ideal #1 uses it works great. It also is the same 3/8-20 thread as the old #1 pressure screw. I think I will add an O-ring to the new pressure screw and use it with one of their ratchet wrenches.

well, that was quick.
I guess Lyman isn't backlogged anymore...That is a good sign.
