Hello all, just a quick intro and to say Hi [smilie=s: from down under.

I've been lurking for many months and have gained mountains of useful information in my quest to cast my own.

My name is Dave from Sydney, Australia and I got back into shooting about 5 years ago after a 12 year break.

I was always keen on rifles and headed out bush when I could, mainly chasing pigs, goats, foxes and rabbits. Now that the wife and I are blessed with 2 young daughters, heading away on weekends became harder and harder so my interest and handguns grew.

The rifle collection shrunk as the pistol collection grew. I love my wheelguns owning 2 Smiths (Model 67, 686 6") and 2 Rugers (4" GP100, 6" Security Six) and 2 semi autos, Ruger SR1911 and a Beretta 92FS.

I get out to the range when I can and being the kind of guy who want's to make his own things I got into casting and love it. Also the financial bonus excluding my time I'm saving $45.00 per 500 boolits.

Anyhow, I look forward to getting to know some fellow casters.

All the best, Dave.

Welcome to the board.
Since you've been lurking here for a while (as I did for quite a while before I signed up), there's no need for me to point out the wealth of information available here. I have noticed several members here from down under, and everyone here is as helpful as can be. Nicest folks of any forum I belong to.

Welcome to the addiction!

I now spend almost as much time on the board as I do casting and reloading. Since you already know a lot about the board, I am sure that you can contribute to the knowledge base here.

Oh yeah, I thought all you Aussies had turned in your guns? Or is that just political BS from your politicians?

Welcome,
If this site was a book it would be a best seller! I seem to always find the answer here.

Welcome aussie-dave, Don't give up on those rifles just yet - think Gallery/short range low power cast practice loads - sort of an over grown 22LR - some of the best time I spent was with my Savage 99 load with pistol boolits and powder. No recoil and cheap to shoot but packed more punch than my 22's could.

Thank's for the warm welcome folks. One thing I like about this forum is the polite and respectful attitude the members have for one another.

In regards to handing in our guns, we lost the rights to own many but we can still own (under strict state government conditions) a few fun toys.

A basic overview for my state, New South Wales as an average Joe we can only legally own bolt action, lever action, pump action or single shot rifles. Mag capacity limited to 10 rounds. U/O, side by side or lever action shotguns. Special permits can be issued for semi auto rifles or pump action / semi auto shotguns.

Handguns - nothing bigger than a .460 S&W. Revolver barrel length nothing shorter than 4" and 5" for semi auto. Mag / cylinder capacity limited to 10 rounds. Shorter barrels and higher capacity with special permit only, ie - security, collector or dealer.

All firearm owners must be licensed for the category of firearms owned and all firearms must be registered. All firearms must be locked away, unloaded when not in use and self defense is not a legally recognized genuine reason for owning firearms. If I pulled a handgun on a bad guy protecting my family and property I'd most likely get the jail time and he'd win compensation for emotional distress I may have caused.

I truly envy the freedoms you good folks in the US of A enjoy.

So what do you cast Dave?

So far with all Lee molds as they were dirt cheap from Titan with the strong $AUD -

TL-356-124-2R - not a great deal of luck in the 92FS
358-125-RF - Excellent in the 92FS
TL-358-158-SWC - Excellent in both .38spl and .357mag using max load of Trail Boss
C-358-158-SWC - Very good in .357mag and 14.5gr of ADI AR2205
TL-452-230-TC - Still testing, so far so good in the SR1911.

I'm doing it old school with the camp stove, cast pot and a dipper. Hours of relaxing fun once you get into the groove. All the molds are 2 cav so I usually run 2 or 3 at the same time.

Welcome, sir! You will meet some very helpful and nice people on the forum. It is very educational and entertaining. Great place to learn and find things of interest as well as locate some very useful tools. I just ordered another die and punch from Lathesmith--did someone ever tell us that this was addicting?:lol:

And, as a p.s., thank you for educating me on the laws of your land. Have heard a lot of misinformation on Australia.

Welcome, Dave. Glad to have you aboard. We visited Oz about 20 years ago when son was working for Hawker-DeHavilland. Made it to Canberra & great museum, Bankstown & Cairns, as well as Sydney, and loved it all.

Welcome dave. What rifles do you have - have you thought about casting for these? I use the Lee 358 158 RF for light loads in my 35 whelen.
we also have a small casting section on shooting.com.au forum, come across and have a look. It is in the reloading sub-forum.

Welcome Dave, glad to have you aboard. one day, Lord willing I would love to visit Austrailia & New Zealand. I have a beautiful little BSA cadet rifle that is stamped NSW. I bought it years ago with the idea of making it a .218 Bee but it is in such good condition and it shot so well as is I hate to change it.
