In stead of using small rifle primers with light .454 Casull loads, say 10 or 11 grains of Unique and 265 grain boolit, can a small pistol or magnum small pistol primer be used? Just wondering.

Thanks

Using Unique at the level you suggest, you should not have a problem with pistol primers. It may even result in better acccuracy.

as long as load data doesnt exceed the pressures developed by the standard 45 LC, pistol primers should work just fine.

I use pistol primers with a 7.5 gr charge of Red Dot and a 290 gr kieth

The rifle primers were originally indicated due to the pressures developed and needing something "heavier duty".

With the load you stated, you should be fine.

There is a thread here somewhere that states the CCI magnum small pistol primers are exactly the same as standard small rifle, just a different label on the box.

Zymurgy50,
It is interesting that you mention that. The other night, I spent a good deal of time trying to find a physical difference between the CCI small pistol and standard rifle primers. NOTHING. I could NOT find any visible differences between the two.

I use Fed small pistol primers with loads up to 1,100 fps with 8.0 to 9.0 grs of Tightgroup powder with cast bullets weighing 260 , 275 & 300 grains ,these are my go to loads ! while delevering excellent accuracy from my 3 FA 454 casulls.
Ive gone as high as 11.0 grs of TG at 1,280 fps with good accuracy, but started to get periced SPP primers. i prefer useing the slower burning powders for loads in that velocity range and up such as HS6 / 820 and 296 with a SRP

SP primers are no problem with Unique or any fast powder. Yes, they could even be more accurate.
The only problems we ever had with SR primers was with starting loads of H110 or 296, powder would not ignite until the loads got near or at max. But they worked with fast powders and so will a SP.

UPDATE:
Today, I loaded up some .454 Casull, 270 grain RFN boolits, 11 grains Unique, using a Small Pistol Primer. The average velocity recorded was 1,002 FPS. Grouping was better than what I have shot with this same bullet and powder charge, before. One of the targets is posted below. It was fired at from 15 yards. Anyway, I guess my question was clearly answered.
